The Med/Surg Director assists the CNO in executive-level management of resources, strategic planning and development of policies and procedures which ensure congruence with the mission and vision of the organization. The Director has operational and functional responsibility for a group of patient care areas and/or special projects or initiatives. The Director will develop communication, knowledge, leadership, professionalism, and business skills necessary to advance to a CNO. What you will do in this role
Assist the CNO in developing and managing the nursing services budget and ensuring sufficient number of qualified staff to assess patient needs. Ensure that continuous performance improvement initiatives are designed to measure and improve the quality of care delivered and are consistent with the organization priorities. Work collaboratively with other patient care and support departments, fostering a climate of open communication and mutual problem-solving activities. Initiate and participate in joint performance improvement activities. Assist in managing costs by continually seeking data that will identify opportunities and take action to eliminate non-value costs. Assume primary responsibility for projects or task groups as assigned, keeping colleagues informed of the progress toward desired outcome. Plan involvement in renovation or new construction of patient care areas and planning of new services that generate additional sources of profitable revenue. Represent the nursing services at meetings; participate with department leaders in designing and providing patient care and services. Foster independence and autonomy in all staff members; promote independent thinking and problem solving. Assume responsibility for continuing education and developmental needs. Participate in professional organizations and community healthcare related organizations. Serve as preceptor/instructor for undergraduate or graduate nursing students upon request. Regularly round on patients, families, employees and physicians to enhance communication, verify alignment, oversee operations, and ensure an exceptional experience. Collaborate with the CNO to formulate policies and procedures aligned with professional standards and regulatory requirements; maintain authority and responsibility for nursing services. Support a professional practice environment that encourages recruitment and retention of nursing staff. Provide leadership to engage nurses in decision-making about practice; promote evidence-based practice and clinical research. Address patient complaints and incident reports; identify system problems contributing to errors and monitor corrective actions. Collaborate with nursing educators to meet learning needs and ensure new staff are prepared to practice independently. Develop and maintain relationships with physician colleagues and other healthcare providers to set goals and plan improvements in patient care or systems. Promote positive patient interactions to enhance patient satisfaction. Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. Master’s Degree in Nursing or related postgraduate health science degree (or proof of enrollment with a written plan) required. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Kentucky or a compact state required. Current BLS required. Specialty certification in Executive Nursing Practice and/or Healthcare Administration preferred. Membership in American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) preferred. 5+ years of experience in a related nursing leadership role required (most recent 3 of the last 5 years in a hospital leadership or direct patient care environment).
