LEAD WORKER, GROUNDS Shift:

6:00 am – 2:30 pm (June – August); 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Pay:

$23.30 per hour

The Grounds Lead Worker is responsible for the supervision and coordination of activities of the workers engaged in the daily operation of landscaping activities, including loading and unloading of equipment, and the performance of contracts in a professional manner.

Introduction The Grounds Lead Worker is responsible for the supervision and coordination of activities of the workers engaged in the daily operation of landscaping activities, and the performance of contracts in a professional manner including loading and unloading of equipment.

Responsibilities

Works with and supervises the crews of grounds workers at assigned work area(s).

Provides normal care of lawns, shrubbery, trees, walks, parking areas, fence lines, flower beds, etc.

Follows/helps create precise schedules prepared by the Grounds Maintenance Manager for cutting, fertilizing, liming, seeding, and application of herbicides, pruning, snow/ice detail, etc.

Observes and reports any signs of abnormal development in lawns, shrubs, trees, etc. to the Grounds Maintenance Manager and/or Arborist.

Maintains records of attendance and work hours for each crew worker and processes time and attendance.

Performs duties in accordance with safety rules, regulations, procedures, and/or instructions.

Notifies the Grounds Maintenance Manager immediately of any workers' injury on the job.

Ensures daily maintenance/operation and storage of equipment and assigned vehicles, including proper handling and cleaning.

Assists workers with problems, appropriately referring matters to supervisor or counselor.

Attends staff meetings as required.

Instructs/performs snow details.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision received: The Grounds Lead Worker is directly supervised by the Grounds Maintenance Manager.

Supervision exercised: The Grounds Lead Worker supervises all workers at assigned site(s).

Working Conditions Mainly work outside; subject to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Working conditions may be inconvenienced by dust, dirt, fumes, or flying objects (grass). Employee may be required to do mandatory overtime with half‑day notice, including weekends, to meet project requirements.

Physical Qualifications The incumbent must be able to stand/walk 95% of the work time and sit 5% to inspect grounds, check equipment, and complete paperwork. Must lift/carry 60 pounds, push/pull 100 pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle requirements for loading/unloading materials and equipment, and planting, cutting trees, and pruning. Must be alert to safety hazards and have a method of communicating. Must see and identify colors necessary to drive equipment and inspect grounds.

Qualifications High school diploma and either 1‑year experience as a gardener and 1‑year experience as a supervising gardener; OR high school diploma plus 6‑year experience as a gardener and 1‑year experience as a supervising gardener.
