We’re hiring an External Communications and Media Relations Director to lead the strategy and execution of our public relations, media outreach, and executive thought leadership. This well‑connected, dynamic professional will have an eye for detail and an ear to the ground. They will have a strong curiosity and drive to uncover compelling stories through an established network that is ready to amplify it.
What You Bring
Proven storyteller in a fast‑paced environment who crafts engaging, accurate content across relevant media (blogs, online publications, digital, social media, etc.)
Quickly learns key aspects of the business that resonate with target audiences.
Develops and executes personalized communications plans for senior leaders aligned with National Life’s business priorities and values.
Identifies and secures high‑impact opportunities across media, events, podcasts, and digital platforms for senior leaders working in collaboration with internal and external resources.
Builds trusted relationships with National Life’s internal and external marketing and PR resources to create thought leadership and media opportunities.
Has a passion to develop and execute external communications/PR strategies, key messages and plans that promote the good the business does in a timely manner.
Possesses clear, concise, credible writing that quickly hooks the reader and results in an increase in traffic to National Life’s communications platforms.
Ruthlessly prioritizes work and projects to meet deadlines and expectations.
Accesses and uses data regularly to inform recommendations and measure impact/results of communications and PR plans.
Preferred Experience
10+ years of experience managing external communications including public relations, media relations, and content creation.
8–10 years of life insurance industry experience.
Proven results achieved through experience, intuition, and a robust network.
Excellent communicator with empathy and listening skills.
Proven experience landing national and local media, using sound judgement and strategy.
Deep connections to help spread the word with key audiences about the good National Life does.
Self‑motivated, results‑oriented and able to work independently in a fast‑paced business environment.
Proactive approach; able to anticipate issues and recommend solutions.
Take direction and offer constructive feedback.
About The Team You will work as a member of the Corporate Communications and Community Relations team, collaborating with other associates across the enterprise to ensure messaging is consistent, our tone is on point, and our content is compelling and accurate. You will be encouraged to think big, to live our do‑good values, and make a positive impact on National Life’s brand.

Compensation and Benefits The base compensation range represents the low and high end of the range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and may be above or below the range based on qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience. The range listed is just one component of our total compensation package for employees.
Other rewards may include an annual bonus, quarterly bonuses, commissions, and other long‑term incentive compensation, depending on the position. National Life offers a competitive total rewards package which includes: a 401(k) retirement plan match; medical, dental, and vision insurance; a company‑funded wellness account for director and below employees; 10 paid holidays; a generous paid time off plan; 6 weeks of paid parental leave; and 6 weeks of paid family leave after a year of full‑time employment.
