Job Description
The Director of Library Facilities is responsible for overseeing, maintaining, and improving the physical plant of Brown University’s libraries, ensuring they remain inclusive, accessible, and safe for students, faculty, researchers, staff, and visitors. The director works closely with library leadership, Facilities Management, Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, and Information Technology to coordinate construction, renovation, and repair projects, as well as security and emergency response activities.
Responsibilities
Oversee the facilities of both the Brown University Library (BUL) and the *John Carter Brown Library* (JCB), managing six major library buildings and their associated spaces.
Set priorities and manage multiple complex facilities tasks, coordinating with University Facilities Management on construction, renovation, and repair projects.
Collaborate with library leadership to ensure continuous improvement in the quality and functionality of library spaces for all users.
Ensure compliance with university policies, state and federal laws, and best practices regarding facility operations, safety, and security systems.
Supervise two unionized building coordinators at BUL and partner with JCB staff on facilities coordination.
Maintain open communication with internal service providers and external vendors to deliver high‑quality facilities services.
Provide guidance to library stakeholders on facility-related best practices and support strategic planning for long‑term infrastructure needs.
Qualifications
At least 10 years of progressively responsible facilities management experience, including day‑to‑day operations, project execution, and complex building systems, ideally in a library, museum, or higher‑education setting.
Experience working with security systems and ensuring safety of library collections and users.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.
Superior oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Collaborative, customer‑service oriented approach.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Regular visits to multiple campus and off‑campus library locations, as well as to Facilities Management offices. Evening and weekend onsite work related to scheduled facilities projects and emergency response.
Regular travel to remote storage annexes and museum‑like spaces within the library complex.
