Overview
Senior Laboratory Chemist role at Reagent Chemical & Research, LLC. Located in St. Gabriel, LA. Reagent Chemical & Research has been a leading US marketer of Hydrochloric Acid for over 65 years with terminals across the US, as well as truck and rail fleets. The Senior Lab Chemist oversees the company’s main analytical lab in St. Gabriel, LA. The position is on the day shift, 6:00am-2:30pm, Monday-Friday, with possible occasional coverage during weekends and holidays. The role reports to the QA Manager and does not have direct reports. Responsibilities
Oversee strict adherence of the lab to all company health & safety policies. Perform daily testing of product lot samples for verification against specifications, generate and communicate reports to Operations and the teams responsible for shipments and producing certificates of analysis (COA), track and maintain all related lab records, and generate COAs when assistance to Operations is needed. Interact with QA, Operations, Sales, Customer Service/Dispatch, and suppliers to promptly respond to product quality inquiries and address and resolve any quality issues. Maintain and calibrate lab equipment, improve analytical and testing capabilities (methods and equipment), and carry out lab projects. Maintain ISO compliance for the lab including SOPs, QC records, calibration records, internal reviews and audits, training, etc. Provide technical and analytical support to internal teams, terminals, and other company labs related to product specifications and customer requirements, QC data and trends, lab equipment and supplies, and analytical procedures. Carry out routine laboratory duties related to handling hazardous materials and chemical waste, ordering supplies, health & safety and housekeeping activities, storage of retains, shipping samples, and other lab administrative tasks. Participate in continuous improvement of processes, systems, and lab methods; assist in the investigation and resolution of non-conformance quality incidents. Keep current with analytical methods and instrumentation, industry standards, and other related technical areas. Provide guidance and support to Lab Technician(s). Maintain open communication with the QA Manager on all QC and lab matters and carry out tasks as assigned by the QA Manager and Terminal Manager(s). Qualifications
Solid scientific/analytical aptitude and problem-solving skills; detail-oriented. Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills; team-player; ability to prioritize tasks and deliver results timely. Proficient in verbal and written communication of technical results and reports, and in writing laboratory procedures. High-level working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint); willingness to learn related computer applications. Education And Experience
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Minimum 10 years of experience in a QA/QC chemical laboratory setting (chemicals distribution or production preferred) with senior-level responsibilities. Extensive experience with analytical methods and techniques, and equipment operation and maintenance including GC, titration/auto-titrators, AA/ICP, IC, pH meter, spectrophotometer, chromatography software (Chromeleon, OpenLab CDS), TOC. Experience developing, qualifying, and improving laboratory test methods and procedures following standard analytical and scientific protocols. Working knowledge of ISO 9001/Quality Management System general requirements; ability to learn and track relevant industry standards. Background in analysis of laboratory/QC data and trend analysis (SPC a plus). Experience or familiarity with regulations related to chemicals used in food processing industry and applications is a plus. General knowledge of chemical industry processes and operations. Physical Requirements/Work Environment
Work in an industrial site chemical laboratory with handling of hazardous chemicals/materials and adherence to health and safety requirements; ability to lift or move weights up to 20 pounds; standing, sitting, and walking in lab and terminal environments (indoors and outdoors). Occasional day trips between local sites when needed. Availability for overnight travel to company or business partner sites as needed; travel is not expected to exceed 10%.
