We are seeking an experienced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a role within the critical care department at Carolinas Medical Center. Primarily this role will cover either the Cardiac or Neuro ICUs. This is an opportunity to live and work in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country.
Details of this practice and qualified candidate:
Work schedule – Rotating 13-hour shifts (7 a‑8 p or 7 p‑8 a) with rotating weekends and holidays; willing to accommodate if interested in either strictly nocturnist or weekender coverage preferred.
Service provides 24/7 coverage with a shift-based model.
Inpatient – Adults – 100%.
One year of experience as an inpatient PA or Acute Care NP required.
Graduation from an accredited ACNP or PA program. Post graduate ICU fellowship preferred.
Nurse practitioners are required to have a master’s degree or doctorate in nursing practice. Certification as an ACNP from a nationally recognized certifying body is required.
Physician Assistants with certification from the National Commission on Certification of PAs are required.
North Carolina license, North Carolina DEA, BLS and ACLS required.
Qualifications
At least one year of experience as an inpatient PA or Acute Care NP.
Master’s degree or doctorate in nursing practice; certification as an ACNP from a nationally recognized certifying body required.
Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants required.
North Carolina license, North Carolina DEA, BLS and ACLS required.

Responsibilities
Rotating 13-hour shifts (7 a‑8 p or 7 p‑8 a); this role will include at least 50%–night shift coverage in addition to weekends/holidays.
Acceptable to accommodate strictly nocturnist or weekender position if preferred.
NC licensure within 60 days of hire.
Physical Requirements Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak English fluently and in understandable terms. Must possess intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and finger dexterity. Must have the ability to react and perform in stressful situations.
Education, Experience and Certifications Must have or be eligible for a DEA license. Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state one works. Eligible for prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in SC required. BLS required per policy guidelines; with expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and concentrate.
Job Summary Includes Neonatal, critical care, emergency services and includes cardio‑thoracic surgery. Patients are typically intubated on ventilators and/or have hemodynamic instability. The focus is on very invasive procedures and the hemodynamic management of very critical patients. Manages ventilator settings, vasopressors and solves complex clinical cases. Schedule includes a mixed rotation of shifts covering weekdays, nights, swing, holidays and weekends. (50%–90% of FTE Includes weekend and/or night coverage).
Essential Functions
Performs initial and periodic medical history, physical examinations, and daily assessments.
Records findings of examinations, assessments and plan of care.
Performs a wide range of surgical and/or medical procedures.
Writes appropriate prescriptions and administers medications.
Orders and interprets laboratory and radiology examinations.
Determines treatment plan for patient.
Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner on the patient's medical record.
Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize and concentrate.
Acts as a patient advocate for the population served.
Attends, participates and contributes to group/practice meetings and development of policies and procedures when requested.
Manages STS Database data collection pre and post‑operatively.
Performs clinic duties one day a week with assigned physician.
Provides weeknight Call on a Q3 or Q4 rotation; weekend Call responsibilities on a Q3 or Q4 rotation.
