Overview The Youth Education Specialists will work closely with the Youth Education Supervisor to support high‑quality programming for refugee and immigrant youth in New York City. The specialists will be part of a team that implements youth education programs, including Youth Tutoring, online Youth English for Speakers of Other Languages (YESOL) classes, and Leaders in Training (LIT), a college access and career readiness program for high school juniors and seniors. They will also support Mini‑NYSA in‑person programs that occur during school breaks.

Responsibilities

Lead YESOL classes

Curriculum preparation and continuous improvement of YESOL curriculum to meet the needs of our current student population, including academic English and test preparation.

Prepare slideshows for each class and update syllabi throughout the semester.

Manage new referral intake, outreach to potential families, and coordinate baseline, midline, and endline English assessments.

Collaborate with parents and teachers to identify specific student needs.

Teach 3‑4 YESOL classes per week, including 2‑3 beginner/intermediate middle‑school groups, 2‑3 beginner/intermediate high‑school groups, a high‑school test‑prep class (Regents, TOEFL, SAT), and parent ESOL classes on Saturdays; additional classes may be scheduled as needed.

Monitor class attendance, document daily notes, gather qualitative data through student surveys and staff observations, and synthesize data for annual reports.

Intern Management

Recruit, hire, and mentor Youth ESOL interns, delegate weekly tasks, review submitted projects and tasks, and provide leadership and professional development opportunities.

Support Mini Newcomer Youth Spring Academy (Mini NYSA)

Plan and instruct lessons on ESOL and related topics for groups of up to 25 students.

Assist the Youth Education Supervisor with the implementation and analysis of student assessment initiatives, including content area assessments, progress reports, and report cards.

Monitor, enter, and analyze student assessment data and assist in the timely production and dissemination of necessary assessments and resources.

Assist in the coordination and implementation of school‑wide Multi‑Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

Lead all events and initiatives, including off‑site field trips for student groups.

Support NYSA

Assist with curriculum creation for teaching YESOL and other subjects at NYSA.

Assist with teacher and staff training for all teachers at NYSA.

Key Working Relationships

Reports directly to the Youth Education Supervisor.

Supervises interns.

Coordinates with other youth program staff and external partners.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field; Master’s degree candidate in education preferred.

Strong command of Microsoft Suite, G Suite, Canva, and other digital platforms.

Classroom teaching experience preferred (both in‑person and online, especially TESOL experience).

Experience with data collection and analysis.

Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Cultural competence and cross‑cultural or overseas experience required.

Experience working with immigrant populations highly desirable.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, adapting programming to shifting client needs and relevant government policy changes.

Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second‑language proficiency in relevant languages highly desirable (e.g., Spanish, French, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Russian, Haitian Creole, Ukrainian, Mandarin).

Flexibility to work on Saturdays and evenings based on program requirements.

Working Environment All applicants must be based in or be willing to work from our New York City office. The IRC NYC RAI office operates in a hybrid environment (3 days in office and 2 remote). The specialist is expected to work in person Monday‑Friday during Mini‑NYSA in‑person sessions, and depending on scheduling, may work Monday‑Saturday during the school year programming times. Online ESOL classes occur after school hours, so the specialist should expect to conduct classes up to 8 pm or later as needed.

Hours and Compensation Hours:

20 hours per week, including 8‑11 hours of instruction time and 9 hours of administration time during regular academic program hours. YESOL classes will be virtually between 4‑8 pm Monday‑Friday and in‑person on Saturdays.

Compensation:

$26.55 – $27.50 per hour (Pay Range: $26.55 – $27.50 per hour, US‑based candidates). Exact offers will be calibrated based on individual experience and the defined job requirements.
