Botanic Gardens Manager

General Job Description This position directs, manages, and oversees all activities and operations of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens and includes supervision of horticulture and other staff. The Director oversees all public relations, fundraising, and events. They must ensure proper building maintenance and safe environments. The Manager coordinates budgeting and purchasing. They coordinate with other city departments and outside agencies. In addition, the Manager regularly coordinates with the Friends of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Foundation. Special consideration will be given to applicants that have a high level of energy, creativity, people skills, event coordination, and experience in dealing with the public.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Assume full management responsibility for all Botanic Gardens services and activities. This includes planning, directing, and coordinating the Botanic Garden’s long and short-term goals; assign projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; review and evaluate work methods and procedures with staff.

Manage the development and implementation of Botanic Gardens goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for each service area. Establish within City policy appropriate service, volunteer, and staffing levels to fit the available budget while maintaining a safe environment.

Oversee and participate in the development and administration of the Botanic Gardens’ budget; approve the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; secure funding, contributions, and grants; approve expenditures and implement budgetary adjustments as appropriate; allocate resources responsibly to maximize the outcomes.

Select, train, motivate and evaluate Botanic Gardens personnel; provide or coordinate staff training for employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline when applicable.

Participate in the development of the Friends of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Foundation’s budget and fundraising projects with assistance from the Treasurer of the Foundation and finance committee.

Explain and justify Botanic Gardens programs, policies, and activities; respond, negotiate, and resolve sensitive and controversial issues, citizen inquires and complaints.

Provide quality public presentations and respond to questions from the community on the Botanic Gardens and its activities on a regular basis.

Represent the Botanic Gardens to the public, other City departments, elected officials and outside organizations; coordinate Botanic Gardens activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations.

Monitor and ensure that best horticultural practices are occurring both inside the Botanic Gardens Conservatory, greenhouses and on the exterior landscapes.

Qualifications for the Job Required:

Demonstrated experience in event planning and coordination, museum management, project coordination, public relations, administration and/or horticultural science. Two (2) years of public relations; plus, eight (8) years of increasing responsible experience in management, including three (3) years of administrative and supervisory duties.

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with further course work in the field of museum management, project coordination, public relations, administration and/or horticultural science. Three (3) years of increasing responsible experience in management, including two (2) years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.

Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 45 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment Indoor, outdoor and greenhouse environment; confined working spaces; humid air. Exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather. Exposure to fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pest control agents. Work independently, irregular work hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
