Summary of Responsibilities

Designs and teaches courses in Respiratory Therapy, including theory, laboratory, and clinical components aligned with CoARC standards and institutional objectives.

Provides timely grading and return of feedback to students on assignments and assessments.

Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study that includes measurable objectives and outcomes for each respiratory care course taught.

Prepares instructional materials such as course outlines, syllabi, exams, laboratory simulations, case studies, mock-ups, visual aids, and instruction sheets as needed to enhance student learning.

Instructs, manages, and supervises individuals and groups in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings, employing appropriate and effective teaching methods for respiratory therapy education.

Evaluates student learning and instructional effectiveness using written exams, laboratory competencies, clinical evaluations, and simulation assessments.

Maintains a student-centered approach to education, fostering professional growth, critical thinking, and ethical practice in respiratory care.

Recommends students for advancement, clinical placement, and graduation based on demonstrated competency and achievement of program standards.

Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records regarding student attendance, academic performance, clinical evaluations, and program follow-up in accordance with institutional and CoARC requirements.

Assists in coordinating clinical and cooperative work experiences, collaborating with clinical instructors and preceptors to ensure quality learning experiences.

Works collaboratively with department chair, program director, faculty, and staff to maintain and improve program quality and effectiveness.

Adheres to the institution’s policies on academic freedom, professional responsibility, and ethical standards.

Maintains safe, well-organized, and properly equipped laboratory and classroom environments, ensuring compliance with institutional and safety regulations.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care from a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)–accredited program.

Current and valid Utah Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license.

Knowledge

Thorough knowledge of respiratory therapy concepts, procedures, and equipment, including mechanical ventilation, airway management, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary diagnostics.

Demonstrated ability to apply current evidence-based standards of care and national credentialing requirements (NBRC, CoARC) in curriculum design and instruction.

Comprehensive understanding of adult learning principles, curriculum development, and assessment methods applicable to respiratory therapy education.

Skilled in designing course syllabi, lesson plans, and laboratory experiences that align with measurable program outcomes and accreditation standards.

Thorough knowledge of institutional, state, and federal safety standards applicable to clinical and laboratory environments.

Ensures compliance with OSHA, CDC, and institutional policies to maintain safe learning and patient care conditions.

Familiar with CoARC accreditation processes, NBRC credentialing requirements, and institutional policies governing respiratory therapy education and student evaluation.

Skills

Demonstrated skill in teaching, facilitating, and evaluating student learning in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings.

Skilled in using diverse instructional strategies, including simulation-based learning, case studies, and technology-enhanced instruction.

Proficient in preparing comprehensive instructional materials such as course outlines, syllabi, exams, competency checklists, mock-ups, and audiovisual aids to enhance student engagement and understanding.

Adept at developing and administering written, oral, and performance-based assessments to evaluate student competency in both cognitive and psychomotor domains.

Skilled in providing constructive feedback to promote student learning and professional development.

Proficient in maintaining accurate and timely records of student attendance, grades, clinical evaluations, and follow-up data in accordance with institutional and accreditation requirements.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with program directors, faculty, clinical affiliates, and advisory boards to coordinate student learning experiences and ensure program quality.

Strong oral and written communication skills for effective instruction and interprofessional coordination.

Ability to participate actively in program review, curriculum revision, and accreditation processes to sustain excellence and compliance within the respiratory therapy program.
