Data Center Technician IV Role
The Data Center Technician IV must possess expert knowledge and be responsible for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, fire life safety systems, and communications infrastructure. We are hiring for the Swing Shift. Mechanical responsibilities include chilled water systems and components, HVAC systems (roof top units, CRAC/CRAH units), and humidification systems. Electrical responsibilities cover electrical/critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main switchgear through the UPS systems to the customer load. Fire Life Safety responsibilities include wet sprinkler systems, pre-action sprinkler systems, and their associated detection devices. Communications Infrastructure responsibilities cover IFD/MDF/MMR management, structured cabling and supporting infrastructure ownership, and customer space management. This role also directly supports processes that maximize customer uptime by collaborating with the Data Center Manager to identify and repair problems, ensure contractor quality, and meet internal customer demands. A Tier IV technician develops creative approaches to minimize operational costs, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies. Duties: Data center subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems. Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems (Electrical, Mechanical, Communications, Building Monitoring and Control). Tracking and trending operational characteristics. Mentoring junior staff. Collaborate with the Data Center Manager to track and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance schedule. Provide guidance to determine maintenance requirements for mechanical and electrical systems. Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency; analyze operating conditions, recommend new technologies, and improve efficiency and cost reduction. Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting outages. Manage data floor and back-of-house mechanical loading capacity to ensure cooling system efficiency. Provide applied mechanical and integrated control expertise for the entire data center. Serve as a knowledge expert for fire and electrical codes; contribute to technical writings for maintenance procedures. Assist Data Center Manager with maintenance discrepancy database management and issue resolution based on priorities. Trouble Ticket Management Work Order Completion Process Infrastructure projects (Internal/Customer) Cage Build-Outs Overhead Installations Rack and Stack Navigate and utilize a CMMS system. Follow developed procedures to solve problems Assist in asset and consumable inventory management Track and label all equipment per established procedures Ensure timely completion of processes pertaining to SLAs and data uploaded to OSS Provide physical security within CoreSite premises Deliver day-to-day exceptional customer service and support Incident escalation and report writing Monitor the building fire alarm system Conduct regular facility and security tours, documenting and addressing issues Adhere to CoreSites Principles of Operational Excellence and 8 Guiding Principles Knowledge
Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in data center environments (e.g., electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switchgear, UPS, PDU, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH, sprinkler systems) Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and building codes related to fire life safety Expert knowledge of fiber optics/cabling infrastructure and industry best practices Expert knowledge of industrial safety best practices (lockout/tagout, arc flash, OSHA and state regulations) Expert knowledge and experience with data trending/tracking and analysis; ability to learn and use PC-based monitoring systems Skills
5-7 years of experience with large commercial/industrial systems (chilled water, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment, VFDs, pumps, HVAC, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, BMS/PLC controls, diesel generators, fuel systems, 480/277 and 208/120 distributions, UPS, pre-action systems) Proven leadership skills Proven expertise in laying out, pulling, dressing, and terminating fiber and copper cabling Experience diagnosing and repairing IT hardware, servers, switches, and structured cabling Excellent communication skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project) Abilities
Effective communication with customers and internal staff Ability to coordinate with contractors for maintenance or upgrades Ability to learn quickly and address issues during and after normal hours Thrive in a process-driven team environment Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Ability to multi-task multiple projects Operate hand and power tools; use electrical testing tools (multimeter, infrared camera) Education/Experience
Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience 5+ years in a mechanical/electrical role within critical facilities (data center/hospital/power plant preferred) Must pass extensive background check and, where permitted, a 5-panel drug test Physical Demands and Special Requirements
