Job Description and Duties Under the general direction of the Maintenance District Division Chief, a Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Minor B/ Emergency Contracts Branch Chief directs and supervises the work activities of a group of engineering employees in developing and implementing minor projects and emergency contracts. The position is subject to callouts and may require non‑standard shifts, usually without prior notice, and involves participation in the district’s emergency response efforts.
Eligibility for hire is determined by the SENIOR TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER, CALTRANS exam score. Applicants who are not currently eligible must be on the state examination list. To apply for the exam, search by typing the classification title on the Caltrans site.

Special Requirements
A valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required to operate a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)
Provide examples that demonstrate experience in investigating, analyzing, and recommending strategies related to roadway rehabilitation, pavement traffic, drainage, and structural/geotechnical/construction‑related/environmental conditions.
Provide examples that demonstrate experience balancing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines, problem‑solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution.
Provide examples that demonstrate experience writing and preparing project plans, specifications, estimates, and other technical documents; breadth and depth of experience in construction contract administration, including change orders, field inspection and testing.
Provide examples that demonstrate experience analyzing staffing and resource needs to develop work plans; monitoring project scopes, costs, and schedules; managing project and contract changes; experience with Highway Maintenance (HM) and State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) programs.
Provide examples that demonstrate experience acting in a lead capacity, assigning duties, evaluating employee work performance, and evaluating employee abilities; personnel management and supervision; ability to manage and lead work teams efficiently and on schedule.
Provide examples that demonstrate experience performing field inspections/data collection and coordinating with field maintenance and construction staff; responding to field emergencies; evaluating infrastructure issues and damages; preparing and overseeing implementation of emergency contracts.
