Works under a Project Engineer to support and learn all phases of civil construction projects, including roads, bridges, airports, utilities, and buildings, gaining experience in field inspection, contract administration, and project documentation. Performs materials sampling and density testing under WAQTC standards, observes and assists materials technicians, and maintains records, reports, and project documentation. Coordinates with contractors, supervises or trains subordinate inspectors/technicians, and may approve or reject completed work in compliance with plans and specifications. Prepares estimates, progress pay documentation, engineering reports, and other project deliverables, ensuring accuracy of field and office data. Participates in sectional assignments (Design, Environmental, Right-of-Way) during non-construction periods, progressively assuming greater responsibility and performing duties under decreasing supervision as competency develops. The Working Environment You Can Expect

This position is based in Fairbanks at the DOT&PF complex on Peger Road, where design, construction, maintenance, and support staff are all within walking distance. The role offers variety: some days you’ll be at your desk using project tools to track progress, document findings, and collaborate with the team; other days you’ll be in the field inspecting sites. Travel during the summer is intermittent, with occasional winter travel that may involve small aircraft or boat. Who We Are Looking For

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies: Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems. Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. Project Management: Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources, including monitoring and inspecting costs, work, and contractor performance. Engineering Assistant 1 Bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an ABET-accredited postsecondary institution. Or a bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a non-ABET-accredited institution, and an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate or proof of passing the FE/FS examinations. Special Note: An applicant who will obtain within nine months a degree from an ABET-accredited institution may apply with conditional offer pending degree completion. Engineering Assistant 2 Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution, AND one year of entry-level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent. Or a bachelor’s degree from a non-ABET institution with equivalent certifications and experience as above, AND additional qualifying experience. Or five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience with specific state-related equivalencies. Substitution: Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for some required experience. The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training positions. Transcripts may be requested to verify coursework. At time of application, provide three professional references and transcripts if using education to meet minimum qualifications.
