The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School is one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished Law Schools. The School offers cross-disciplinary legal education, a collaborative environment, and an innovative curriculum to enrich student learning. The faculty is interdisciplinary and productive, emphasizing scholarly excellence and a shared effort to advance understanding of the law. The Penn Carey Law community fosters collegiality and a supportive academic environment. The Director serves as a strategic partner to faculty and others in the high-level implementation of live, virtual, and hybrid events. The Director consults with the Dean, faculty members, Center and Institute faculty and staff, and visitors to envision and develop significant conferences, colloquia, symposia, and meetings. The Director oversees events and leads a team of Conference and Event Program Managers and an Administrative Coordinator to ensure excellence in events hosted by Penn Carey Law. Strategically partner with faculty and department leads in planning, conceptualizing, and communicating best-in-class conferences and events at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.
Design and implement a strategic approach to conferences and events, establishing best practices and ensuring maximum coordination of events to enhance the reputation of Penn Carey Law.
Provide advice to and consult with the Dean, the Associate Dean of Finance and Administration, Conferences and Events team members, and faculty and departments to ensure the highest standards of event management throughout all programs.
Programmatic
Develop and implement systems for the management and logistical execution of events, conferences, symposia, and activities at Penn Carey Law.
Supervise the creation of event plans that match the level of stewardship and expectations of various audiences.
Ensure the efficient management of logistics for multiple events simultaneously.
Oversee the coordinated calendaring of all Penn Carey Law events and communicate about opportunities and potential conflicts with Law School and other constituents.
Personally manage the implementation of several major Penn Carey Law events, including Dean’s Initiatives and endowed lecture series.
Operational
Coordinate conferences and events planning with the Facilities department, establishing regular communication mechanisms between offices.
Share information, systems, and event content with Penn Carey Law’s Communications Department to raise awareness of events and activities.
Coordinate and collaborate on events across all departments, especially in support of Development and Alumni Relations and Student Affairs.
Represent Penn Carey Law to high-level guests, event participants, and Penn offices and departments collaborating on events at the Law School.
Management
Hire, inspire, and manage a team of five full-time colleagues in support of conferences and events.
Develop and manage an events budget that covers expenses and coordinates vendors and supplies across the School.
Develop reports on conferences and events for the Dean and other departments; present these reports on request.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Requirements
B.A. or B.S. required, with seven to ten years of increasing managerial and programming responsibility.
Portfolio of creative, innovative work demonstrating the ability to design and implement a wide variety of high-level events from start to finish.
Established track record as a collaborator within the department and the institution.
Ability to conceptualize and execute large and small events that align with educational, pedagogical, and stewardship goals, with planning and budgeting across event and academic cycles.
Experience managing staff and coordinating large projects while championing an integrated approach and strong results.
Experience working with faculty, alumni, donors, vendors, facilities management, and senior administrators.
Must be available to work occasional weekends or after hours.
