The

Data Scientist III – Machine Learning Engineer

will be responsible for developing and deploying applied machine learning models that improve member engagement and enhance discovery experiences across Sam's Club's digital and physical touchpoints. You'll work alongside a talented team of Scientists and Engineers to design scalable ML solutions for Search, Ranking, and Personalization, using modern data pipelines and advanced modeling techniques. You'll contribute to the full ML lifecycle — from data preparation and feature engineering to model training, evaluation, and deployment — helping transform data into actionable intelligence that powers smarter recommendations and seamless member experiences. • You have 2+ years of experience in applied machine learning, data science, or AI systems development.

• Strong foundation in algorithms such as Collaborative Filtering, Matrix Factorization, or Deep Learning.

• Proficient in Python and familiar with ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.

• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, Azure, or AWS) and basic MLOps concepts.

• Knowledge of information retrieval, ranking, or recommendation systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

Designing, training, and evaluating ML models that drive personalization and discovery.

Working closely with Data Engineers to operationalize and scale models in production.

Supporting A/B testing and experimentation to measure and optimize model impact.

Collaborating with Product and Engineering teams to define data and model requirements.

Learning and applying emerging AI techniques to continuously improve member experiences.

Option 1: Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 2 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Option 2: Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.

Option 3: 4 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Data science, machine learning, optimization models, Master’s degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics.

Successful completion of assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.

Experience with open source frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).

Background in creating inclusive digital experiences and knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2 AA) and assistive technologies.

The annual salary ranges shown are:

Sunnyvale, California US-11807: $117,000.00 - $234,000.00

Bentonville, Arkansas US-10735: $90,000.00 - $180,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Other benefits include: stock, medical, vision, dental, 401(k), company-paid life insurance, PTO, and other programs described by Walmart. PTO/PPTO details vary by job classification and tenure.
