CDOC Social Worker/Counselor IV-Mental Health Supervisor - (BUENA VISTA)
This position is located at the Buena Vista Correctional Center in Buena Vista, CO. It is open to Colorado state residents.
Responsibilities
Planning, directing, and maintaining delivery of mental health services, ensuring compliance with mental health guidelines and managing resources.
Coordinating with facility administration, staff, and other clinical administrators regarding the mental health needs of offenders.
Establishing treatment plans for offenders with mental illness or special needs populations.
Providing training on mental health issues and directing management of psychiatric crises or emergencies.
Supervising, organizing, reviewing, and evaluating staff performance for competency and efficiency; recommending hiring and corrective action for staff.
Maintaining clinical standards and compliance with all applicable mental health standards; interfacing between the mental health program and other CDOC departments, facilities, and outside agencies.
Facilitating communication, team building, and ensuring staff receive clear and accurate information.
Managing payroll entry and addressing day‑to‑day mental health operations for the assigned unit or program.
Acting as a consultant and providing training to facility, community, and state service providers on treating incarcerated offenders with mental illness.
Participating in formal and informal mental health evaluations, assessing psychiatric and developmental disability levels; providing group, brief, and individual therapy and crisis intervention, including a 24‑hour on‑call rotation.
Maintaining required credentials, including licensure and certifications for specialized practice (e.g., sex offender treatment or domestic violence).
Minimum Qualifications
Valid, active license from the State of Colorado as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Psychologist, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
Two (2) years of licensed or licensure‑candidate experience in mental health or sex offender populations, with current valid licensure in Colorado.
Required Competencies
Advanced knowledge of mental health standards and guidelines.
Commitment to continuing education and innovative clinical techniques.
Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration across programs and external agencies.
Strong leadership, analytical, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Capability to read and comprehend English and communicate fluently in English.
Ability to provide direct patient care to offenders and maintain required licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory experience over professional or behavioral health staff, including decision making on pay, status, and tenure.
Clinical supervision of employees or interns, guiding diagnostic assessment and treatment planning.
Experience with severely mentally ill and developmentally disabled populations, including discharge planning.
Leadership and oversight of a mental health program with extensive licensed treatment experience.
Conditions of Employment
Must be 21 years of age.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
Must hold at least a high school diploma or GED.
No felony convictions; must meet state criminal background requirements.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e‑Verify to confirm eligibility.
Must pass all modules of the 6‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including defensive tactics and written examinations.
