Assistant Vice President, Ports and Marine Engineering
We are seeking an
Assistant Vice President, Ports and Marine Engineering
to join our
National Maritime Practice Group . The position can be based out of one of the following offices: Irvine, San Francisco, San Diego (CA), Miami (FL), Portland (OR), Houston (TX), Tampa (FL). This role is available as a full‑time or part‑time position focused on the development, design, construction, and inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in both the public and private sector.
Responsibilities
Supervise the work of technical staff, engineers, and task leads, tracking workloads and participating in workload forecasts.
Mentor staff to support their growth as they transition to project leads and senior technical positions.
Prepare or oversee calculations, cost estimates, drawings, technical specifications, and reports/studies.
Track progress of milestone activities and manage completion of Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) submissions.
Assist with engineering reviews of permit applications to ensure compliance with state, federal regulations and engineering standards.
Perform quality assurance/quality control checks for marine facility projects, including cargo terminals and federal facilities.
Prepare alternatives analysis reports and presentations for repair projects and capital improvement programs.
Manage cross‑functional teams to execute mid‑level projects, collaborating with civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, mechanical, coastal, fire protection, and architecture disciplines.
Act as the engineer of record, providing high‑level technical assistance on marine, port, and coastal systems.
Maintain project schedules, budgets, and profitability; monitor hours, expenses, subcontractor performance, and ensure satisfactory delivery.
Lead review meetings, client presentations, and design charrettes.
Prepare technical proposals and presentations; participate in client interviews and scope negotiations.
Develop a client base for high‑level marine, port, and coastal engineering services and identify additional business‑development opportunities.
Remain current with latest marine, port, and coastal engineering techniques and practices.
Maintain a strong safety record and adhere to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
Work flexible schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Travel as required depending on client and project specifics.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
10+ years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering with proven marine and coastal design experience (rehabilitation and new design).
Professional Engineering license required (multi‑state preferred) or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
Proficiency in technical computations and calculations for ports and marine structures.
Highly proficient in technical writing, engineering software, and fundamentals including statics and problem solving.
Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, and similar tools, and ability to supervise staff using these programs.
Experience with design/build processes and site inspections.
Knowledge of maritime codes (ASCE, COPRI, etc.) and Department of Defense criteria.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with clients, regulators, architects, engineers, and team members.
Proficiency in building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
Strong leadership and ability to manage mid‑to‑senior‑level teams while adhering to QA/QC processes.
Demonstrated critical review of submittals and preparation of technical deliverables for complex projects.
Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills applied to planning and engineering processes.
Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s policies.
Ability to work flexible schedules and occasional travel.
Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card (TSA background check required).
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
Structural Engineering license.
Active member of a national professional practice organization.
Ability to obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) background check for access to U.S. Navy facilities.
