Role Summary The Senior Cost Engineer will play a pivotal role as part of the Rivian Cost Engineering organization in Irvine, California. The role will be responsible for completing cost models that accurately analyze the costs associated with components across Rivian vehicles. Your expertise in cost estimation will guide design, procurement, and procurement cost reduction, ensuring competitiveness and high‑quality products.

Responsibilities

Cost Engineering: • Provide guidance to design engineers for proposed new or modified designs to achieve required function at minimum or target cost. • Develop should‑cost models and projections for multiple vehicle commodities specialized in mechanical content—high pressure die casting, forging, machining, stampings, and injection molding. • Utilize information from written assumptions, sample parts, CAD models, and engineering drawings. • Gather details and compile data to estimate all production costs including raw materials, labor, and tooling. • Interface with manufacturing plants and suppliers to ensure economical tooling, processing, and operations. • Support Procurement in analyzing supplier cost breakdowns to drive cost reduction opportunities. • Mentor Procurement team members based on manufacturing and process cost expertise. • Perform teardown of complex automotive components to develop Bill of Materials when detailed CAD is unavailable. • Conduct Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE) to generate cost reduction ideas and improve efficiencies. • Support competitive vehicle benchmarking for future model development and target costs.

Project Management: • Assume ownership of projects; plan milestones and identify risks to ensure timely delivery of cost models. • Proactively manage task completion and regularly update cross‑functional teams on status, timing, resources, and challenges.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or Finance.

Minimum of 3 years automotive or manufacturing experience at an OEM or Tier 1 manufacturer.

Proficiency navigating CAD models in CATIA or similar software.

Ability to interpret design and manufacturing drawings.

Knowledge of Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE) techniques and financial principles.

Capability to independently create a Bill of Materials for a given commodity or design.

Entrepreneurial, ambitious, independent, detail‑oriented, structured, goal‑oriented, flexible, and resilient—exhibiting a start‑up spirit.

Collaborative team member with effective communication in meetings and briefings.

Strategic thinker with strong attention to detail.

Desired

Master’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management, or similar.

Solid knowledge of vehicle parts and subsystems and their interactions.

Proficiency in CATIA or similar CAD design programs.

Experience with aPriori or similar digital cost modeling tools.

Pay Disclosure Salary Range for California‑based applicants: $107,800 – $134,800 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and factors permitted by law).
