Summary Of Position
The Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, programming, implementing and maintaining electrical and automation systems for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable, efficient, and innovative control solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in PLC programming, SCADA system development, and a solid understanding of water and wastewater processes. Full-time, exempt position.
OBJECTIVES OF THIS ROLE Design, program, implement, and maintain electrical and automation systems for water and wastewater infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements.
Position Responsibilities
Develop logic diagrams, program, and configure PLC, SCADA software and hardware based upon control specifications to assure safe, reliable, and optimal equipment operation.
Write factory acceptance testing procedure detailing test parameters for product end user.
Perform factory acceptance testing procedures with end user.
Maintain complete project documentation with respect to engineering design and construction, including all construction packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
Collaborate with programmers and engineers to design and implement process control narratives.
Debug and troubleshoot PLC or SCADA related issues
Document code changes and updates for future reference.
Follow coding standards, best practices, and guidelines.
Education, Certification, Skills and/or Abilities Required
Minimum 1-3 years of related experience. PLC and SCADA programming for water/wastewater infrastructure projects preferred.
Fluency with programming at least 3 manufacturers PLCs.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering/Technology or related field and industry experience.
Certifications Preferred
Certification in PLC programming or SCADA systems (e.g., Rockwell Automation, Inductive Automation, VT SCADA, Siemens, Schneider, AVEVA).
ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or related credentials.
Training in water/wastewater systems and processes.
Experience Required Technical
Knowledge in PLC platforms preferred (Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Siemens, or equivalent).
Experience with SCADA systems and HMI development.
Strong understanding of water/wastewater processes and equipment.
Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC, DNP3).
Knowledge of IT/OT convergence, cybersecurity standards, and networking.
Familiar with Databases (e.g., MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
Interpersonal
Critical thinking skills, excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent English verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Spanish a plus.
Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently when required.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions
Occasional travel to project sites for installation, testing, and commissioning may be required. Ability to work flexible hours as needed. Office noise level is typically low to medium; it can be loud on a jobsite.
