Job Description
Project Engineer/Estimator will provide technical support to the Estimating Team and Project Management Team. The position will bridge the process of project estimation through project completion. The following list is a summary of responsibilities although additional work tasks may be required by the company’s operations or clients.
Project Engineer will report to the Executive Vice President of Preconstruction
Attend pre-bid meetings with customers, owners, engineers, and architects as required.
Meet weekly to review bid priorities. Ensure that all bids are prepared and submitted as directed by the Exec VP of Pre‑Construction.
Perform accurate estimate take‑offs to provide project quantities to the Estimating Team using Blue Beam
Attend formal and informal training sessions to understand the various Software Programs utilized in Estimating (Blue Beam, Heavy Bid) and Project Management (Sage, Microsoft Project)
As required, pick up plans for jobs to be estimated from customer locations. Review specifics of the job with the customer while at the project site
Obtain quotes from at least three sources of supply for equipment rentals and materials to be purchased.
As necessary, visit job sites of projects being bid to ensure that all job conditions are known and accounted for in the estimate.
Where appropriate, maintain and revise a checklist of general jobsite conditions that could potentially affect the company’s costs to perform a project.
When jobs are awarded to the company, prepare purchase orders with vendors for materials with releases to be scheduled by the project team.
After orders have been placed with vendors, make follow‑up calls as appropriate to ensure the timely delivery/availability of the materials as per the schedule.
When bidding projects or phases significantly different from past jobs, obtain input from the Project Manager to ensure agreement that all requirements have been adequately identified and sufficient hours have been estimated.
When bidding a job for a contractor, determine, where possible, what other contractors are bidding the work and advise the estimating team.
Create estimate proposal letters for client submission
As jobs are awarded to the company, attend job kick‑off meetings and provide information to the Project Manager and Job Foremen on the details of each project.
When jobs are awarded to the company, create an electronic “CONFORMED ESTIMATE” file that includes all quotes, drawings, subcontracts and all final documents upon which the project price was based.
Perform and update all NJ One Calls for the company.
As required by the scope of the additional work being requested by the customer, prepare estimates for change orders and submit them for approval.
On a regular basis search for new sources of supply for the company’s most commonly purchased items. Where possible, maintain at least two vendors for all commonly purchased items.
Advise subcontractors whose performance requires removal from the approved list. Propose potential new subcontractors.
Handle all warranty returns to the manufacturers of any defective equipment returned from the field.
Complete and maintain the HC Project Checklist for each new Job Award and ensure that all tasks are completed by the due dates as established by the Job Kick‑off meeting.

Primary Role:

Support Project Manager with:
Review of Job Plans and Specs thoroughly within 2 days of Job Award‑ notify Project Manager of any discrepancies or inconsistencies
Determine HC Schedule Based on HC Estimate and Customer Requirements
Job Set Up
Obtain all current plans and specifications from Estimating folder and move to Construction file
Print set for Project Manager and Foreman
Work with Estimating to get all reports from HCSS to Construction file
Cost Report
Resource Report
Plans and Specification
Familiarize with plans, specifications, and Scope of work Letter
Subcontractor and material Procurement
Review project plans and Resource Report for all subcontractor and vendor requirements for the project
Subcontractors:
Obtain three quotes for subcontract work. Work with Estimating to see if three quotes was already secured.
Prepare leveling sheet for final selection of subcontractors
Submittals
Develop submittal checklist from plans and specifications
Assist in obtaining and reviewing information and approvals for processing of shop drawings, product data and samples. Assist in the communication of this information across all levels of the project team.
Work with Project Manager and Dee to have them submitted to client
Scheduling
Work with Project Managers to get schedules into Microsoft Projects and to help facilitate Two Week Look Aheads
Request for Information
Assist Project Managers in the submission and responses for Requests for Information (RFI’s).
Change Orders
Assisting Project Manager and Estimators with take offs and pricing for change order of ongoing projects.
As‑Builts
Assist in the preparation of final records for the project including close‑out documents, Operations/Maintenance (OM) Manuals, etc.
Additional
Work Model: 90% in‑office (Newark, NJ) & 10% site visits.
Salary Range: $65‑75k/yr. (Based on experience)
