The Impact You'll Have:
We are seeking a Senior Professional Transportation Engineer to lead and grow our City/County Design practice. This role focuses on delivering preliminary and final design services for city and county clients, including roadway reconstructions, municipal utility replacements, stormwater system improvements, and urban street enhancements. You will provide leadership across all phases of project development, from scoping through design completion, while mentoring staff and expanding Alliant's client relationships.
Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
Lead the development of preliminary and final designs for municipal, county, and urban transportation projects, including geometric layouts, roadway plans, grading, drainage, and utility coordination.
Design Oversight:
Review and guide the production of detailed plan sets, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and adherence to applicable standards.
Specification and Report Writing:
Prepare technical specifications, feasibility reports, and other technical documents for transportation and municipal projects.
Modeling and Drafting Support:
Direct and oversee the use of CADD platforms (MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, or AutoCAD Civil 3D) to efficiently produce high‑quality design models and construction documents.
Mentorship and Staff Development:
Coach and mentor Graduate Engineers, Design Support staff, and junior Lead Designers to build technical skills, project understanding, and a culture of quality and collaboration.
Design Coordination:
Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure that project design components align with scope, schedule, and budget requirements. Coordinate with other functional design groups (Traffic, Water Resources, Survey, etc.) to ensure design work is integrated throughout the project.
Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC):
Provide thorough technical reviews at key design milestones, addressing geometric design, drainage systems, utility design, and plan constructability.
Technical Resource:
Serve as an internal expert on municipal, urban, and county design practices, State Aid standards, MnDOT coordination, and best practices for City/County roadway reconstruction projects.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (or related engineering field)
Licensed Professional Engineer
7+ years transportation design experience producing layouts, plans, specs, and estimates
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and transportation design software (MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D).
Strong communication and leadership skills with an emphasis on mentoring and client service
Commitment to delivering high‑quality work on schedule
A passion for innovation and ownership with an entrepreneurial spirit
Skillful in presenting technical concepts to clients and the public in understandable terms
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with MnDOT State Aid standards and local municipal specifications
Experience developing and managing multi‑disciplinary project teams
