Job Description: Taper
Tapers are responsible for finishing walls, ceilings, and trim using hand and mechanical tools that meet specified finishing standards. They ensure production and quality standards are met or exceeded, applying drywall tape compound to seams, nail, and screw indentations on drywall panels. Tapers work on new installations and repairs, installing and finishing metal, plastic, and aluminum trims. The role involves applying multiple coats of compound, sanding after each coat, and ensuring a smooth finish. Additional responsibilities include: Reading and interpreting drawings Checking surface quality and alignment Organizing work schedules and materials Cleaning and maintaining tools Mixing joint compounds Applying fill and finish coats Finishing inside and outside corners Performing various sanding techniques Skim coating and spraying finish compounds Understanding drywall finishing levels and methods Tapers are primarily responsible for the quality and production of their work, reporting to a foreman or lead. They must work safely, within precise standards, and demonstrate physical ability to climb scaffolds, handle materials, and perform physical tasks up to 100 pounds. Note: In the San Francisco Bay area, wages range from $20.01/hour for entry-level apprentices to $57.16/hour for Journeymen, based on union scales per the current collective bargaining agreement.
