Shift / Schedule 0.9 FTE position, three 12‑hour shifts per week with rotating day‑shift start times (5:30 am‑6:30 am‑7:00 am); two weekend shifts (one day and one night) per 6‑week schedule, one summer holiday, one winter holiday, and one on‑call shift every third schedule.

Description The Feinberg Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provides world‑class care to patients recovering from anesthesia. Nurses perform high‑acuity, complex care, managing pre‑operative risks, critically ill and post‑operative patients, and a wide range of surgical specialties.

Specialty Care and Devices Include

Shock‑Cardiogenic, Distributive, Hypovolemic, Obstructive

Pre‑operative care to CABG, transplants, valve surgeries, general surgery, trauma

Urology, Interventional Radiology, Post‑ablations, Organ transplants/donors, Abdominal Surgeries, Gastric Bypass, Neurosurgical procedures, Spinal procedures, ENT, Plastics, Skin grafting, Lobectomy, Wedge resections, Bronchoscopy, Vascular procedures, Orthopedic procedures, EVD, Shunts, BiPAP, Ventilators, LVAD, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Responsibilities

Advocate for patient‑centered, culturally sensitive care and collaborate with the health‑care team.

Develop individualized, age‑specific nursing plans of care using the nursing process.

Act as patient advocate and facilitate resolution of conflict situations through established communication channels.

Maintain a safe environment and protect patient health, safety and rights.

Participate in research, evidence‑based practice and quality improvement initiatives.

Practice safe surgery‑specific post‑operative care, including assessment, management of potential complications and discharge teaching.

Identify pre‑anesthetic surgical risk factors.

Advance clinical expertise through continued education and specialty certification where eligible.

Educate team members, patients and families; evaluate and document patient responses to interventions.

Leverage critical thinking to pose relevant clinical questions and implement timely nursing interventions.

Provide educational plans for patients and families, consult appropriate experts, and participate in team goal formation.

Maintain ethical standards of practice and intervene appropriately during complications.

Participate in volunteer initiatives, professional organizations, mentorship, and peer feedback processes.

Collaborate across hospital services, meet internal and external regulatory requirements, and contribute to innovation and quality improvement.

Qualifications Required

Graduate of an NLN‑accredited school or college of nursing.

Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or higher.

Current Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license.

Current American Heart Association CPR (health‑care provider level) and ACLS certifications.

Analytical ability (conceptual and quantitative).

Oral, listening, and written communication skills.

Strong human‑relation skills to collaborate effectively in difficult situations.

Physical ability to lift/carry up to 35 pounds and push/pull with 50 pounds of force.

Preferred

Experience in specific clinical areas.

Nursing specialty certification, if eligible.
