Summary Description:
Under general supervision of Unity Support Coordinator, the Re-Engagement Specialist finds students who are not enrolled in school and assists them in participating in identifying an appropriate educational setting and re-enrollment. Incumbent performs related work as required.
Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities
Seeks to find missing students and responds to requests to investigate and evaluate students with habitual truancy who have dropped out; consults with schools, locates students, parents, guardians and/or other responsible adults.
Interviews relevant parties either in person or by telephone; works with school, students and parents or guardians to complete an intake and assessment with goal of re-enrollment.
Works closely with Family Advocates and Accountability to coordinate efforts to find students and assist them in re-entry into the education system.
Gathers data and prepares detailed reports of findings; maintains records and correspondence as required by District policies and procedures.
Contacts and works with community agencies such as social service, law enforcement, recreational, religious, educational and legal services; refers students and parents to community programs that support the student and family.
Works with school staff; identifies and reports suspected cases of child abuse and neglect; participates in meetings, in-service training, staff development and other professional growth activities related to the goal, objectives and activities of the Intervention Department.
Employment Standards Required
Education:
Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, social services, humanities, criminal justice or related field.
Experience:
Two (2) years of successful experience working with at-risk students preferably in an educational setting; experience in consulting with families and community agencies; relevant experience in investigative work is helpful.
Knowledge of: Basic interviewing, counseling and casework principles and techniques; basic investigative techniques; report writing and record‑keeping; laws, regulations and procedures affecting truancy issues; community resources.
Skills: Interviewing people from diverse socio‑economic, cultural and educational backgrounds; obtaining confidential and sensitive information; interpreting and explaining complex information; analyzing and evaluating statements; gathering and analyzing investigative materials; exercising good judgment; preparing and maintaining accurate records, case files and reports; computer proficiency; dealing effectively with families, citizens, public and school officials; operating quickly and effectively in emergency situations; understanding and following oral and written instruction; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all parties.
