Program and Role Summary Wayfinder’s
Davidson Program for Independence
at the Los Angeles campus is a comprehensive residential rehabilitation program for adults ages 18 and older who are blind or visually impaired, many with recent vision loss. Participants learn assistive technology, orientation and mobility, braille, and independent living skills. Each client pursues individualized goals that lead to a confident transition to an independent life and education or employment.
Position Summary The primary focus on the
Braille Instructor I
is to organize, develop, and implement individualized course instruction for blind and visually impaired adult students for typing and computer/technology instruction. Provides and oversees the instruction necessary to accomplish students' objectives.
This is a part-time position budgeted for
24 hours/week .
Primary Responsibilities
Instruct students in the use of digital recorders, notetakers, book player devices, refreshable Braille displays, and Braille notetakers.
Implement classroom management techniques to keep students on-task while maintaining a professional instructional environment.
Write frequent and detailed tracking notes and required reports on each client including Monthly Student Progress Reports and Staffing Reports.
Works closely with, and is responsive to, staff members to insure effective services for students in the program.
Other duties as outlined in the position description.
Education and Experience
An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
One year of experience working with clients with visual impairments is preferred.
Willingness and ability to make frequent field visits and attend meetings, conferences, and other job-related events away from headquarters. If driving a personal vehicle, must be approved by our agency’s automobile insurance carrier.
