Job Description As an individual contributor, you will function as the responsible Mechanical Engineer on programs and internal development projects. You will design, layout, test and evaluate mechanical and electro‑mechanical devices or systems with an emphasis on structural analysis. You will prepare design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval, analyze mechanical requirements with a focus on vibration/shock environments to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints, and conduct structural analysis on space and airborne electronics packages utilizing FEA software and create final documentation based on findings.
Essential Functions
Own all aspects of the mechanical design for products under your control.
Work closely with Designers and Drafters to maintain engineering models and detailed drawings.
Generate mechanical engineering design concepts that meet equipment specification requirements and refine the design using CAD software, 3‑D printed models, simulation tools, and functional prototypes.
Work with Configuration Management to maintain all design documentation.
Perform structural design and analysis tasks on complex mechanical hardware including circuit card assemblies (CCAs), electro‑mechanical devices, complex electronics packaging, and ground, airborne, and space systems.
Work multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment and adapt quickly to changing situations.
Have the ability to work independently or within a multi‑disciplined team environment.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
This position requires the ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
2+ years of design experience for aviation or space environments.
2+ years of CAD using SolidWorks or CREO.
3+ years experience working with structural analysis tools such as SolidWorks Simulation, Ansys, Nastran, etc.
Experience with payload and module‑level structural load path design and analysis.
Preferred Additional Skills
Active Secret Security Clearance is preferred.
Electronic packaging design experience is highly preferred.
Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA) experience.
Strong understanding of applicable government and industry standards including ASME Y14.5 (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and ASME Y14.100 (Engineering Drawing Practices), and its application techniques.
Strong analytical skills with emphasis on using and/or directing finite element analysis (FEA) desired.
Experience with ECAD‑MCAD translation.
Experience with machined part design.
Experience with structural validation testing in accordance with MIL‑STD‑810.
Ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines in an environment of competing priorities with a degree of autonomy and integrity.
Knowledge of PCB layout and design practices and standards.
Familiarity with electronics assembly and construction processes and techniques.
Experience with Microsoft Office tools, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Compensation & Benefits In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater D.C., Denver, or NYC areas is $87,000.00 - $161,000.00. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as the final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. L3Harris also offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company‑paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements.
