Position Summary The Safety Monitor plays a key role in ensuring the security and wellbeing of clients, staff, and visitors at the centralized shelter intake site and during transportation operations. This role maintains a visible presence to deter unsafe behavior, responds to incidents promptly and professionally, and supports a welcoming, trauma‑informed environment that prioritizes dignity and de‑escalation.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Security Oversight

Maintain a consistent presence at assigned posts (entrance/exit, lobby, intake space, or vehicles).

Monitor cameras, conduct routine perimeter checks, and ensure controlled access to restricted areas.

Support orderly entry and exit of clients and staff; check IDs as required.

Incident Response & Reporting

De‑escalate tense or disruptive situations using nonviolent, trauma‑informed approaches.

Respond to emergencies (e.g., medical, behavioral, physical altercations) and notify appropriate staff and authorities.

Document incidents clearly in logs and reports, using The Grove platform when appropriate.

Client Engagement & Support

Greet all clients and visitors with professionalism and respect; help set a calm tone for the space.

Assist clients with directions, basic needs requests, and access to services when possible.

Support staff with client safety concerns, behavioral observations, and transport coordination.

Environment Monitoring

Help maintain a clean and safe environment by identifying hazards and coordinating with janitorial/maintenance staff.

Monitor weather conditions and assist with activating emergency shelter or warming/cooling protocols.

Ensure guests follow basic behavioral guidelines and that safety protocols are followed at all times.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

1+ year experience in security, residential shelter, crisis response, or customer service preferred.

Demonstrated ability to remain calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental in high‑stress situations.

Training in de‑escalation, trauma‑informed care, or crisis intervention strongly preferred (or willingness to complete).

Comfortable using basic technology, including incident logs and mobile communication tools.

Successful background check and required health clearances.

CPR/First Aid and Narcan certification required or willingness to complete.

Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
