The program applies a layered approach implemented by the AmeriCorps Mentors & Tutors for K–6 students. All students at the school site benefit from the support of organized collaborative games and conflict resolution during recess / break and lunch. EXL Mentors provide students with additional support through targeted mentoring and tutoring services that focus on both academic growth and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The assessment process takes a holistic approach to understanding each student’s needs using a project‑developed screening tool. This tool incorporates a combination of academic test scores, behavior data, and input from teachers and staff to guide individualized support and ensure every student receives the assistance they need to thrive. EXL members also help support classroom and before‑/afterschool activities for students, and become an integral part of the school community. EXL is a program of the Napa County Office of Education, celebrating 25 years of supporting AmeriCorps members serving in schools in 2023.
