Overview
Maintenance Technician II (Painter, Carpenter, Mason) at Inside Higher Ed / University of Massachusetts Amherst. Role focuses on painting, carpentry, and masonry maintenance across campus facilities. Responsibilities
As Painter, apply paint, varnish, wallpaper, and similar materials to interior and exterior surfaces. As Carpenter, install, maintain, finish, and repair architectural surfaces, structures, hardware, building system components, and furnishings within campus buildings. As Mason, construct and repair brick, block and plaster walls, walkways; perform demolition; mix concrete and mortar; apply masonry techniques. Respond to routine maintenance and emergency calls. Maintain buildings using carpentry skills to construct, alter, repair, and install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, hardware, ramps, shelving, and furniture. Prepare surfaces and apply products (paint, stain, varnish, wall coverings) to industry standards using brushes, rollers, sprayers, or appropriate equipment. Set up ladders and scaffolding as needed; interpret and follow layouts, blueprints, and sketches; estimate time and material needs. Operate vehicles on- and off-campus as assigned; promote excellent customer service and respect for diverse customer needs. Other Functions
Perform other duties as assigned; may provide functional supervision. Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in painting, plus demonstrated competence in carpentry and masonry. A diploma or certificate in painting, carpentry, or masonry may substitute for experience if it demonstrates competence in all three trades. Current valid Class D Driver’s License. Knowledge of principles and techniques in Masonry, Carpentry, and Painting maintenance procedures and repairs. Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and standard practices in the carpentry, painting, and masonry trades. Working knowledge of safety practices and procedures in these trades. Skill in the use of electric and non-electric hand tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to read and interpret plans, blueprints, and drawings. Ability to estimate time and materials; establish and maintain harmonious working relationships and work as a team with tact and respect. Physical Demands / Working Conditions
Use electric and non-electric hand tools. Work in confined spaces; climb and work from ladders and scaffolds. Lift and carry heavy objects; stand for prolonged periods; maintain stamina and endurance. Additional Details
Class 2B Hoisting License required within six months of hire. This is a maintenance function that may require overtime and returning to work when directed; incumbent is responsible for updating the service desk with a current phone number. This position is designated as essential personnel. Work Schedule
