Position Summary The Postdoctoral Research Training in Lung Injury and Inflammation program is supported by an NIH T32 grant (PIs: Drs Steve Dudek and Irena Levitan). The training focuses on advancing the next generation of leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine through a multifaceted research environment centered on the pathophysiologic theme of Lung Injury and Inflammation.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct original research in one of three thematic pathways:

Molecular Mechanisms and Preclinical Models ,

Computational and Omic Approaches , or

Comparative Effectiveness and Health Inequality .

Serve as a principal investigator on projects within the NIH‑funded Center, including but not limited to:

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) – study endothelial dysfunction and bacterial triggers.

Sleep‑disordered breathing research – develop prognostic biomarkers for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Indoor air quality and respiratory health – link indoor pollutants to asthma, COPD, OSA, and other respiratory diseases.

Pulmonary Hypertension – investigate endothelial dysfunction, hemolysis, and shear stress.

Cytoskeletal protein regulation of pulmonary endothelial cell barrier function.

Publish findings as a first author in peer‑reviewed journals and present at national conferences.

Collaborate with faculty, trainees, and interdisciplinary team members at UIC.

Qualifications

PhD/Doctorate in physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related biomedical science field.

U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency.

Strong record of first‑author publications in high‑impact journals.

Experience or interest in pulmonary physiology is a plus.

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and work in a team.
