Overview
Under direct supervision, the Phlebotomy Technician collects blood samples by performing venipunctures, finger or heel sticks on patients, ensuring the quality of blood and assuming responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient, following established standards and practices. The technician is responsible for processing the specimens and delivering them to the appropriate department.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs test order entry in the Hospital Information System/Laboratory Information System.
- Obtains venous and/or capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
- Uses a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information.
- Operates simple medical laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge.
- Communicates with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery and storage.
- Responds to requests for STAT phlebotomy when indicated.
- Can stand for prolonged periods of time and walk periodically during phlebotomy work.
- Separates specimens according to departmental procedure and stores them properly when necessary.
- Enters patient demographic data into the laboratory computer system, ensuring accurate records and avoiding duplicate entries.
- Responds to telephone inquiries for general questions.
- Monitors pending phlebotomy orders and ensures collections are completed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy preferred.
- Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized society (e.g., American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians) preferred.
- Minimum of two years of work experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
- Experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
Compensation
- Pay Range: $18.48–$25.99 per hour
