General Statement of Duties
Operates a selection of heavy-motorized equipment and performs a variety of other tasks as required. An employee in this class may be responsible for the efficient and safe operation of equipment, ensuring that all garbage and trash is picked up and properly handled, or that other assignments requiring the use of heavy motorized equipment, are performed properly. Standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator because of the higher degree of skill required in operating equipment, as well as the type of equipment operated, plus additional responsibilities associated with the different tasks involved, such as supervising other equipment operators, mechanics, maintenance workers, refuse collectors or other subordinate workers.
- Performs pre-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment by checking radiator water level, oil level, battery water level, turn signals, lights, mirrors, and visual inspection of condition of tires and other items depending on the equipment;
- Operates combination loader/back hoe;
- Supervises crew(s) involved in assigned tasks and is responsible for correct completion of those tasks in addition to operating equipment;
- Supervises work crews operating chipper, chain saws, and stump grinder, and participates in the use of all equipment;
- Operates garbage and trash trucks along specified routes;
- Operates pay loader, bus, trench hog, grader, bucket truck and hoist truck, skid loader, water/spray truck;
- Operates sweeper, sweeping traffic areas and other parts of the City;
- Operates, assembles and disassembles showmobile;
- When not operating motorized equipment works as a laborer or semi-skilled laborer as assigned.
High school graduation or GED plus some experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.
Qualifications
- Possession of a valid Florida commercial driver's license "Class B" or higher. “N” tank endorsement will be required for Heavy Equipment Operators hauling liquid or liquid gas in a permanently mounted cargo tank rated at 119 gallons or more or a portable tank rated at 1,000 gallons or more.
- Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of motorized equipment;
- Good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations and accident prevention practices;
- Skill in the operation of automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions;
- Ability to make mathematical calculations related to mixing formulas for spraying operations;
- Ability to lift and drag heavy tree limbs and materials;
- Ability to work at heights;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to respond to back-up alarms, shouted responses, commands and warnings;
- Ability to maintain equipment;
- Ability to accept responsibility.
Physically able to perform duties. Services and maintains all of the equipment. Works as a laborer, or semi-skilled labor as required. May work with pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Does related work as required.
