Offer Description
As part of a three-year research grant co-funded by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic and the Polish National Science Centre (2026–2028), the Department of Vegetation Ecology of the Institute of Botany is opening a postdoc research position focusing on THE ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN FORESTS IN THE 18th and 19th CENTURIES . The successful applicant will participate in the project “Forest of the Anthropocene: the role of Pinus sylvestris in the formation of modern states, societies and environments in the 18th and 19th centuries” led by Péter Szabó. This multidisciplinary, international environmental-historical project will investigate how the gradual adoption of coniferous trees (Scots pine in particular) as dominant elements in modern forestry led to social, administrative, economic and environmental transformations in East-Central Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Research Field Environmental science > Other Education Level PhD or equivalent Skills/Qualifications Ph.D. or equivalent in history, environmental studies, geography or a related field relevant to environmental history experience in historical research, preferably of the Early Modern and Modern Periods, previous environmental historical research is an advantage ability to read 18th and 19th-century sources in German. The ability to read sources in Czech is almost a must but is negotiable, knowledge of Polish is an advantage but not necessary knowledge of forest history is an advantage Specific Requirements ability to independently develop a predefined research programme good communication skills, readiness to engage in interdisciplinary teamwork flexible and independent way of organizing work with a clear focus on science conducting research on the development of forestry theory in the 18th and 19th centuries in Western and Central Europe and on the implementation of such theories in the Czech lands including conflicts with rural populations publishing research papers in historical / environmental historical / other journals presenting results at international conferences salary of c. €26,450 per year (CZK 53,000 / month) flexible working hours, 25 days of paid vacation, 5 sick days contribution to food expenses legally mandated health insurance and contribution to the social security system work in the laid back and beautiful city of Brno, capital of Southern Moravia project budget for travel to conferences and workshops support for career development and mentoring Eligibility criteria full professional CV (including publication record) motivation letter including your research interests, expertise and previous experience proof of eligibility (Ph.D. degree or equivalent) Selection process evaluation based on the applicants’ CV and other materials Number of offers available 1 Company/Institute Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences Country Czech Republic City Brno Postal Code 602 00 Street Lidická 971/25 Geofield
