Brown University Health . Summary: The Lead Medical Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager. Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs independently in various laboratory sections of Pathology. Oversees the operations and personnel performing testing in a specific laboratory section or shift. Performs non-routine and/or specialized tests and analyses that require advanced problem solving and/or research skills due to their complex nature. Responsibilities
Investigate incidents or issues raised by staff or clients (e.g., Outreach clients, physicians), identify probable causes, and suggest potential resolutions.
Prepare and determine suitability of solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures; adapt variations for special tests as needed.
Apply advanced knowledge in a specific laboratory section to conduct and interpret routine, specialized, or innovative tests and analyses.
Participate in research projects within the assigned laboratory section and contribute to review, analysis, development, and implementation of new or improved procedures and techniques.
Perform complex clinical laboratory tests, monitor procedures and parameters, interpret and analyze test results, and relay results to physicians or authorized recipients.
Discuss findings with physicians when necessary and serve as a technical resource for other personnel within the area of expertise.
Provide guidance in resolving difficult problems, including troubleshooting equipment, setting up complex testing procedures, and defining testing parameters.
Provide clinical instruction to students and residents; may conduct formal classroom sessions on topics within the area of specialization.
Participate in orientation and training of new employees; contribute to review of QC and maintenance records and to writing or updating laboratory procedures as needed.
Monitor equipment operation, calibrate equipment, troubleshoot issues, perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs; maintain cleanliness of equipment, glassware, instruments, and work areas.
Perform duties of a Medical Technologist or other duties within the area of responsibility as assigned.
With the Manager, provide oversight of daily testing in the section or on shift; address technical or procedural issues; submit revisions of policies and procedures for approval; participate in hiring, scheduling, evaluations, and disciplinary recommendations as appropriate.
Foster patient- and family-centered care and laboratory services in alignment with Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering age-specific needs (geriatric, adult, adolescent).
If performing HLA testing, conduct testing to evaluate immune status of transplant candidates before and after transplantation to facilitate donor organ and recipient matching.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or closely related field or equivalent education/experience as defined by CLIA standards.
National certification (or eligible) in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology by ASCP or equivalent.
Advanced or Master’s degree in area of specialization preferred, but specialized knowledge can also be gained through equivalent work experience.
Knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, development, and cultural patterns.
Two years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Technologist Specialist or equivalent, demonstrating technical expertise and problem resolution in a specialized area or shift.
Supervisory Responsibility
Provide technical supervision for Specialists, Technologists, Technicians, or students performing all Stat and routine testing, including training, guidance, problem resolution, and documentation review.
With the Manager, provide functional supervisory responsibility for laboratory staff, including interviewing candidates, scheduling, task assignment, training, monitoring, performance evaluation input, and disciplinary action recommendations.
Physical and environmental requirements: Operate equipment and instruments, perform procedures, interpret results; stand and work at benches; exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins, and other hazards; mental and visual dexterity; ability to lift and carry supplies. Rotational on-call assignment required.
Compensation and Benefits Pay Range : $35.20-$58.07
