The City of Wilmington, a leading Delaware employer, provides the City's sanitation, recycling, street cleaning, water, and transportation services through the Department of Public Works. The Department offers a wide array of services, including once-a-week recycling and once-a-week residential solid waste collection, treatment and distribution of high-quality drinking water, collection and treatment of sewage, stormwater management, street sweeping, paving and repairs, maintenance of traffic signs and signals, line striping, rodent control, snow removal, and maintenance of the City fleet and properties.

Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for collecting and transporting solid waste and recyclables using sanitation trucks while ensuring safe and efficient operations in various weather conditions. Will also provide support for snow removal as needed.

Performs difficult and heavy manual labor in connection with general sanitation duties.

Operates compactor or packer-type refuse trucks, which collect garbage, rubbish, and refuse.

Operates snow removal equipment as needed.

Work occasionally requires the performance of tasks requiring the use of hand tools.

Chucking is required on an as-needed basis to cover operational needs.

Possess and maintain a valid CDL Class B driver's license with airbrakes endorsement and active medical examiner's certificate, a good driving record, and the ability to pass drug screening mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers.

Performs all related work as required.

Education and Experience Graduation from high school or a GED equivalency; good knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of moderately complex heavy equipment such as trucks; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge: Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled manual tasks without close supervision.

Skills: Some experience in performing difficult and heavy manual labor in connection with general sanitation duties; good customer service skills and the ability to deal with the general public; ability to understand oral and written instructions.

Abilities: Ability to detect operating defects in the equipment and to perform daily preventive maintenance duties; ability to lift or move heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. over extended periods of time; ability to walk for prolonged periods and distances in hot and cold weather.

Licenses: Possess and maintain a valid CDL Class B driver's license with airbrakes endorsement and good driving record.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements All selected applicants must pass a criminal background investigation, drug test, and pre-employment physical.

Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.

Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50-100 pounds.

Frequently works in precarious places and is exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Regularly required to reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls. Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and talk or hear.

Total Compensation

Starting salary up to the median salary/step four based on qualifications and internal equity within the classification; merit increases are given after a satisfactory performance review.
