Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker – Caltrans District 3 Location: Salinas, Monterey County Salary: $4,102.00 - $4,865.00 per month (minimum salary for new to state candidates)

Job Summary Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for the general maintenance of highways, freeways, bridges, and related equipment. The incumbent operates vehicles requiring a Class C driver’s license, including light trucks, automobiles, and bridge maintenance or emergency support equipment. Duties include litter, weed, and debris removal; crew support; and response to emergency calls. The position may require overtime, night and weekend work, and temporary or intermittent shift variations.

Responsibilities

Perform maintenance activities on highways, freeways, and bridges.

Operate a Class C licensed vehicle and related equipment.

Remove litter, weeds, and debris from roadway surfaces.

Collaborate with crew members and maintain equipment in safe condition.

Respond to emergency calls and support emergency services as needed.

Work overtime, including nights and weekends, and adjust to temporary or intermittent varied shifts.

Possibly be loaned to other cost centers per agency requirements.

Qualifications

Valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license.

Successful completion of the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam (or current eligibility on the state examination list).

Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, adverse weather, and uneven surfaces.

Physical ability to operate equipment, stand, walk, or sit for extended periods.

Proficiency in wearing protective safety equipment (hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, etc.).

Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations (e.g., handling of hazardous chemicals).

Drug screening clearance prior to hire.

Working Conditions The incumbent will work predominantly outdoors, exposed to wind, rain, snow, heat, or cold. Tasks require standing or walking on uneven surfaces and operating equipment that may produce noise, dust, or hazardous chemicals. Appropriate protective gear must be worn at all times.
