$2,500 Signing Bonus*
Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment, under limited supervision. Analyzes and diagnoses gas and fuel operated vehicles for maintenance defects, performs Virginia state and emission inspections of vehicles and equipment, conducts road tests on new and repaired vehicles, operates specialized equipment common to the automotive repair industry and machine shops, and performs related work as required.
Day Shifts: 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., or 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Evening Shift: 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Locations: Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox depending on the needs of the department.
Note: This job announcement may be used to fill multiple full‑time Fleet Technician positions. This is an entry‑level position, and the salary offer will not exceed the mid‑point ($67,785.95) of the advertised salary range. Position may be underfilled as a Fleet Technician Aide (S15); the Underfill Requirements are stated below.
* To qualify for the $2,500 signing bonus, new county employees hired in the full‑time Vehicle and Equipment Technician I position must possess a valid CDL at the time of application. The bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
Illustrative Duties
Repairs, services, inspects, and diagnoses components such as engines, transmissions, after‑treatment exhaust systems, brakes, clutches, radiators, electrical/electric components, HVAC components, hydraulic system components, pumps, bearings, steering, suspension, axles, differentials, and sub‑systems for automobiles, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, off‑road equipment, generators, and other mechanical equipment.
Performs basic general preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including changing oil filters, lubricating chassis, replacing belts, hoses, tires, and other parts for diesel, internal combustion, and hybrid engines.
Performs basic preventive maintenance on electric‑engine vehicles, including software updates, brakes, and tires.
Follows checklists to ensure all critical parts are examined.
Reads and interprets diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems.
Performs emergency road and tire repairs in all weather conditions.
Maintains records of inspections, test results, work performed, and parts used in the automated vehicle maintenance system.
Attends fleet‑specific and safety training.
Stays aware of new trends and technologies in the field of automotive repair.
Cleans vehicles and equipment, neatly stores tools and parts, properly discards old/unused parts, sweeps areas, and collects and empties trash as needed.
Follows all environmental regulations, disposes of chemicals and trash in designated areas, and recycles when required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by journey‑level service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Mechanical skills for engine components and systems and their interaction.
Troubleshooting skills to diagnose mechanical problems and make appropriate repairs to a wide variety of automotive and industrial equipment.
Basic keyboarding skills.
Ability to use tools and test equipment pertinent to the trade.
Manual dexterity: lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, crawling, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to test‑drive vehicles and equipment.
Ability to read and comprehend relevant documents.
Ability to work cooperatively with others.
Employment Standards Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above high school may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Possession of a set of hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry is required. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Valid driver's license.
A valid Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) or a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B is required within 30 days of an offer. Applicants with a CDL Permit must obtain a CDL B within eleven months of hire date.
Underfill Requirements
This position may be underfilled as a Fleet Technician Aide (Grade S15; $45,255.39 – $75,424.96). The underfilled candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the Fleet Technician I within one year of the job announcement’s closing date.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on an average of once daily. Stoop, bend, twist, and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively; use a creeper or get on hands and knees several times daily. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and may include exercise.
