Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technician

The Washington Military Department (WMD) is seeking a skilled HVAC Technician to maintain comfortable, efficient, and safe building environments for employees, the public, and the agency’s mission. This civilian position does not require military service affiliation.

Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance of HVAC systems.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair mechanical systems, including compressors, belts, bearings, motors, fans, heat exchangers, burners, filters, and controls.
- Operate, maintain, and remove heating/cooling components as needed.
- Repair heat pumps, air‑conditioning systems, and hot water boiler systems.
- Respond to emergency, routine, and safety work orders related to HVAC.
- Order materials required for HVAC installation and maintenance.
Required Qualifications
- Journey level standing as a refrigeration mechanic or steamfitter, supported by one of the following:
- Completion of a recognized refrigeration or steamfitter apprenticeship.
- Full journey level status in the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union.
- Five years of experience in refrigeration or steamfitter trade.
- Completion of a recognized HVAC apprenticeship program.
- Vocational or trade school training as a steamfitter or refrigeration mechanic substitutes experience for up to two years.
Desired Qualifications
- 06A Electrical License or Training Card.
- Universal CFC Recovery Certification.
- Knowledge of standard HVAC practices, system operations, occupational hazards, and safety practices.
Conditions of Employment
Work schedule: Monday–Thursday (4‑10) 6:00 am – 4:30 pm. Telework is not available.
Driver’s License: Must have a valid Washington state driver’s license that meets REAL ID Act requirements.
Military Facility: Willingness to work at a Military Controlled Access Installation. Background checks and a DoD Secret‑level security clearance are required.
Emergency Assignment: May be required to work alternate locations, rotating shifts, weekends, and evenings during emergency situations.
Travel: Occasional statewide travel up to 5 % may be required, including overnight stays.
Background Investigation
Must successfully complete background checks and obtain/maintain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) to receive a DoD Secret‑level clearance. Processing may take up to six months post‑employment.
