Wastewater Management (WWM) is seeking experienced Heavy Equipment Operators specifically those with expertise in operating heavy equipment and combination flusher vacuum truck.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties required in the operation and preventive maintenance of a combination flusher vacuum truck (the latter of which is heavy equipment) and tanker truck.
  • Performs visual inspection of sewer utility manholes and lines, identifying defects and executing cleaning requirements.
  • Uses other equipment that includes mirror poles, crash cushion trailers, easement clearing machines and camera-flusher units.
  • Acts as field lead for a team of two to five employees directly responsible for performing and completing inspections and maintenance activities with a flusher, easement sewer cleaning machine, or inspection equipment in an assigned geographic area.
  • Uses laptops and desktop computers to utilize asset management systems with County GIS to create, edit and complete assigned work orders.
  • Responds to sanitary sewer emergencies, including backups, overflows, and other sewer related service calls. In the absence of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor, this position acts as field lead for a team and assure completion of inspections and maintenance related activities.
  • Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor, and/or Environmental Service Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lead and direct a crew, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely, while fostering positive relationships with team members and the public.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, supervisors, and the public, as well as completing reports and documentation.
  • Ability to assess situations, make quick decisions in the field, and resolve issues related to sewer blockages and equipment malfunctions.
  • Flexibility to handle emergency situations, adverse weather conditions, and extended hours, while maintaining composure and effective performance under pressure.
  • Ability to foster and maintain open and positive communication within a team, and to also be able to de‑escalate negative or uncomfortable situations.

Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on‑call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after‑hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties. Overtime may be mandated when emergencies occur related to the health, welfare, or safety of either the public or employees.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Heavy Equipment Operator position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi‑tractor trailers, as appropriate.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED

  • Valid driver's license
  • Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL) – Tanker Endorsement
  • DOT Medical Card

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of work experience operating construction equipment
  • Two years of experience driving semi‑tractor trailers, tank trucks, dump trucks, crash cushion
  • One year of experience performing routine inspections and maintenance of underground utilities, sewer manholes and sewer lines visually
  • Intermediate level of experience using computer systems related to Microsoft Office, GIS, GPS, and an asset management program. Includes experience navigating tablets/applications
  • Participation in or completion of Manhole Assessment Certification Program (MACP) or Line Assessment Certification Program (LACP)
  • Possession of any of the following certifications:
    • Advanced Traffic Control
    • Confined Space Entry
    • Virginia Flagger Certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift/slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance, set up and operate Vacuum Flusher truck equipment units, work around and in contact with raw sewage, communicate orally and in writing, operate keyboard-driven equipment and use automated technology, maintain visual acuity for computer data, navigate rough terrain, and work in confined spaces for long periods. Must remain physically fit for manual labor in all environments and endure variable and extreme weather conditions. Does not include entrants weighing 310 lbs. or more. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
