Job Duties:

The Laboratory Manager plays a key role in supporting instructional labs and lecture demonstrations for courses offered by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. This technical support position involves preparing, maintaining, and troubleshooting lab equipment and software; collaborating with faculty, instructional staff, and teaching assistants on lab design and implementation; and training teaching assistants and instructional staff in the use of instructional equipment and computer programs related to the teaching lab. Duties will include determining the proper equipment for instructional labs and demonstration experiments, securing the instructional lab equipment and materials, and ensuring that each experimental station in the instructional laboratories is properly equipped and ready for the students.

In addition to maintaining and repairing equipment, the Laboratory Manager contributes to curriculum development by suggesting improvements and introducing new experiments. Expertise in electronics, computers, mechanical systems, and discipline-specific knowledge is essential. The Laboratory Manager also oversees the organization and availability of demonstration kits and provides hands-on support when complex setups are required. This position reports directly to the Department Chair.

Key Job Responsibilities:

5% of duties

Miscellaneous duties

1.

Participate in training exercises as required by federal or state law, university or department policy.

2.

Ensure compliance with all UW system safety policies and work appropriately with campus safety officers.

3.

Assist departmental outreach and non-departmental instructional activities when requested (Open House, Science Bag, etc.).

4.

Perform other activities assigned by the Department Chair and as needed within the Department of Physics and Astronomy that are consistent with the position of Laboratory Manager.

10% of duties

Maintain instructional laboratory and demonstration equipment, materials and facilities

1.

Monitor and maintain facilities in a neat and safe manner. Identify problems and/or potential problems and implement/request corrective actions in a timely manner.

2.

Monitor the operation and use of lab and demonstration equipment, supplies and facilities. Inventory equipment and track use of any equipment loaned to other Physics teaching labs to ensure it is returned in a timely manner.

Check equipment to ensure it functions properly.

3.

Maintain equipment and supplies. Perform maintenance and repairs as required.

Inform faculty and Department Administration of major repair/maintenance concerns.

Secure repair services as required and as permitted by the budgetary constraints.

4.

Devise and follow a regular schedule of maintenance activities for all equipment.

Document repair problems and repair equipment when feasible.

Establish service and user manual files for equipment and materials.

5.

When requested, assist faculty and department administration with the planning and design of facilities to meet future needs.

6.

Ensure compliance with safety policies. Develop and maintain safety protocols regarding laboratory equipment and hazardous substances.

60% of duties

Coordinate all support activities for instructional laboratories in physics courses.

1.

In coordination with faculty supervisor of the lab or independently, determine and document equipment and supply needs for each lab session by reviewing laboratory manuals and enrollment levels, as well as by discussing the respective experiments with instructional staff.

2.

Work in collaboration with instructional staff including graduate teaching assistants to develop, post, and implement a schedule of experiments before each semester begins to ensure that all required materials are available for lab exercises on a timely basis.

3.

Coordinate usage of lab equipment with faculty lab supervisors to mitigate scheduling conflicts.

4.

Order materials and equipment required for lab exercises and activities in the instructional lab classrooms.

i.

Investigate alternate state approved sources for materials to ensure quality and economy of materials and equipment.

ii.

Order materials and equipment with consideration to scheduled delivery dates and classroom need. Check all materials received for quality and proper quantities. Track order status as needed.

iii.

Maintain an updated inventory of existing materials and equipment, as well as the quantities and locations within the facility.

iv.

Carefully monitor expenditures vs. assigned budget for cost. Advise Department Chair of budget concerns and unusual purchase requests.

5. Set up laboratories for respective lab exercises as required by class schedule.

6. Check to ensure that all materials and equipment are available in adequate quantities.

7.

Test equipment and supplies to ensure appropriate results can be obtained in lab exercises. Remove and store lab equipment properly when experiments have been completed.

8.

Troubleshoot problems with lab equipment including computers and associated software on short notice.

Advise instructors and teaching assistants of any perceived or anticipated problems.

9.

Train and advise teaching assistants and other instructional staff in safe equipment operating procedures and requirements.

10% of duties

Provide technical expertise and support for the planning and implementation of laboratory exercises

1.

Assist faculty and lecturers in designing and testing lab exercises. Assist faculty and lecturers in the continued development of existing lab exercises. Assist faculty and lecturers with curricular projects including the development of appropriate lab equipment.

Document activities for future reference.

2.

Assist faculty and other instructional staff in determining and acquiring materials, equipment, and support facilities needed to conduct the testing and implementation of new lab exercises.

3.

Train faculty, lecturers, and teaching assistants in the use of equipment for lab exercises. Provide and update documentation of set-up procedures for teaching assistants and lab helpers as needed.

4.

Assist/advise on the development/updating of lab manuals.

15% of duties

Maintaining and assembling demonstration equipment for lecture sections.

1.

Under the direction of experienced instructional faculty and staff, create and maintain a detailed inventory of demonstration experiments and associated equipment.

2.

Develop and update when necessary documentation of set-up procedures for

lecture demonstration experiments.

3.

Collect and organize into labeled "kit" form, for accessibility and ease of use, selected demonstration experiments.

4.

Be available on a pre-arranged basis to assist instructors to assemble the larger demonstration experiments that cannot be stored in "kit" form or which require the quick movement of heavier/more complicated equipment into and out of lecture hall. Assist in the assembly/troubleshooting thereof during 10-minute gap between lectures.

5.

When requested, assist in the development of new demonstration experiments.

The target hiring range for this position is expected to be $60,000 - $70,000. (Final salary offer will be determined based on qualifications and experience)

Required Qualifications: High school or technical college diploma

Experience with computer-controlled equipment and desktop software

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in a STEM field.

Experience with troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, maintaining and cleaning instructional or demonstration laboratory equipment.

Experience with instructional laboratory equipment and software

Background in positive interactions with diverse populations.

Demonstrate ability to provide customer support.
