Position Overview The City is hiring fleet mechanics at three levels—Entry, Journey, and Senior—within the Department of Facility Maintenance, Automotive Equipment Service Division.

The role involves repairing and maintaining the City’s fleet of automotive and heavy vehicles, including light vehicles, construction equipment, and heavy duty trucks and cranes.

Pay

Fleet Mechanic I (BC-08)

– $5,471/month

Fleet Mechanic II (BC-10)

– $6,079/month

Fleet Mechanic III (BC-11)

– $6,300/month

Special Work Conditions Shift work, weekend and holiday duty, rotating and/or night shifts may be required.

Qualifications Minimum Citizenship/Residency Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non‑citizen eligible for unrestricted employment under federal law.

Experience Requirements

Fleet Mechanic I

– Sufficient automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment experience, typically obtained through a recognized automotive or diesel mechanic program.

Fleet Mechanic II

– Experience with the maintenance and overhaul of light and heavy motorized vehicles and equipment, including supplemental training to increase knowledge.

Fleet Mechanic III

– Experience with complex hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy vehicles such as dump trucks, truck tractors, and refuse trucks.

Education and Training Credits

Associate’s degree in Applied Science (AAS) in Diesel Mechanics Technology.

Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Technology or Diesel Mechanics.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificates.

License/Certificate Requirements

Valid Driver’s License (Type 3).

Prior to Appointment: D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate, Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B).

By the End of Probation: Environmental Protection Agency Certificate of Fitness, State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate, Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator.

Responsibilities The mechanic will:

Repair, maintain, and overhaul fleet vehicles and equipment.

Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance.

Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems using modern diagnostic techniques.

Document work performed and parts used in the appropriate systems.

Collaborate with other maintenance staff and adhere to safety and environmental regulations.

Maintain an accurate and current knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment technology.
