Job Responsibilities

Evaluate patients’ physical and functional status, including muscular strength, motor functions, reflexes, ambulation skills, and ability to perform activities of daily living.

Obtain patient history, conduct interviews, and administer sensory tests, muscle tests, range‑of‑motion exams, and other evaluation techniques.

Determine suitability for treatment and develop a treatment plan that includes exercise, modalities, balance activities, and gait training.

Assess pain levels (0‑10) and provide pain education and interventions in collaboration with physicians and pain specialists.

Discuss evaluation, goals, and treatment with patients and families and instruct them on exercise programs and equipment use.

Participate in patient discharge planning and develop in‑home programs when appropriate.

Document evaluations, progress, and maintain records for physicians and insurance carriers.

Select and order appropriate assistive devices such as wheelchairs, canes, crutches, and prosthetic or orthopedic devices.

Attend department education programs by teaching and supervising students, when requested.

Contribute to research projects as needed.

Perform any other duties assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the assigned Clinical Manager, Therapy Manager‑Innovation Center, and Therapy Manager‑AbilityLab.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and physical therapy treatments at a level normally acquired through completion of a Doctoral degree from an accredited school of physical therapy.

Licensed to practice in the State of Illinois.

Current CPR certification required.

Understanding of growth and development of infant, child, adolescent, and geriatric patients.

Ability to interpret growth and development information to meet patient needs.

Interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, patients, and families and exchange patient progress information.

Analytical ability to prioritize, provide input on departmental policies, procedures, budgets, and recommend program changes.

Ability to lift 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds frequently when transferring or positioning patients.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.

Some exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.

May include exposure to community, home, work, school, and off‑site clinic settings.

Includes Saturday and Sunday rotation work.

Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $73,250.00 annually – $120,000.00 annually
