Salary Information

Starting Annual Salary $63,128.00

Upon Completion Of Academy (Corrections Officer I) $64,272.00

Six months after graduation (4% merit increase): $66,830.40

12 months after graduation (4% merit increase): $69,513.60

18 Months After Graduation (Corrections Officer II): $70,865.60

10 years after hire date (Corrections Officer III): $100,796.80

15 years after hire date (Corrections Officer IV): $109,075.20

20 years after hire date (Corrections Officer V): $113,443.20

The above figures do not include future Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), Public Employee Retirement System (NVPERS), or collective bargaining agreement changes.

Definition Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Corrections Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Corrections Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

Possession of a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) or General Education Diploma (GED).

Possession of an appropriate, valid Nevada driver license at the time of hire.

Best Candidates Will Have

Some courses/classroom credits beyond high school;

Three or more years of public contact experience;

At least one year of experience in law enforcement or criminal justice;

Strong work history, including no terminations, minimal turnover and high commitment to employers;

Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

Leadership skills;

Proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading and writing in Spanish;

Flexible schedules; and

A commitment to complete the Academy and Field Training.

Special To This Classification

Must be 20 years and 6 months of age by the date of the first exam.

Must be a Citizen of the United States by the date of the first exam.

Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code 921-922.

Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.

Conditions of Employment

Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards for Corrections Recruit throughout the duration of the academy.

Obey the laws of the State of Nevada, the County of Clark, and the City of Las Vegas.

Successfully complete Corrections Recruit academy training.

Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance.

Purchase their own equipment required for this position.

Purchase a vest upon graduation for future use as a weapons carrier.

Meet and maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons.

Participate in the Department's random drug screening process.

Maintain a valid Nevada driver license.

Upon academy graduation, work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.

Qualify under Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to work in a detention facility.

Comply with NRS 617.454, NRS 617.455, and NAC 441A.370, including undergoing, within 14 days upon transfer to a corrections facility, an annual tuberculosis testing/screening, and every 12 months thereafter.

Successfully complete the CO Recruit Academy, including firearms qualification and maintaining such qualification throughout corrections career.

Wear a body camera and vest, and other safety equipment.

Work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends.

Study the learning materials on off-duty time.

Comply with the Department's rules and regulations.

Adhere to the Department's values represented by the "ICARE" acronym.

Stay current on their training.

Obtain/maintain a Nevada driver license, and register/maintain registration of personal vehicle with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety (DMV).

Undergo a background investigation, which will include a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, standard hearing test and psychological testing.

Maintain physical fitness necessary to carry out job duties.

Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.

Accept the requirements of the specific area of assignment.

Personal Appearance: While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Tattoos that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches except for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.

All physical and mental conditions sufficient to meet all standards required for successful completion of the entire Corrections Recruit academy training.

Vision sufficient to read the computer screen and fine print in documents.

Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond to environmental sounds.

Dexterity and mobility sufficient to operate equipment.

Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain persons.

Endurance sufficient for extended periods of work.

Alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times.

Application Screening (Pass/Fail): Applications will be reviewed to determine those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications. These qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the remainder of the testing process. Applicants will be notified of the results of the screening process via email by 4:00 pm (PST) on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

Testing Process: Online Written Exam (Weighted 100%) and Fitness Exam (Pass/Fail). Candidate must complete both exams on the designated date.
