Introduction We are seeking a Field Service Technician to join our Field Services team. You will be responsible for offering practical field repairs, welding, and technical support for Metso customers and third‑party contractors on existing and newly acquired retrofit/rebuild/replacement equipment. The role represents Metso’s service‑oriented image and requires significant experience in mechanical and maintenance work, particularly with mining equipment. The position reports to the Field Service Managers in Salt Lake City, UT, and requires up to 85% travel.

Responsibilities

Plan and prepare field work based on detailed scope, drawings, specifications, and safety regulations.

Provide technical service during demolition, installation, checkout, start‑up, and commissioning to ensure safety and proper equipment erection.

Perform millwright tasks such as installation and alignment of ring & pinion gears, mill components, and complete mill change‑outs.

Repair process equipment (crushers, conveyor belts, pumps, screens, mills, etc.).

Conduct critical gear and laser shaft alignments, precision surveying with Brunson Scope, and dial‑indicator method alignments.

Read micrometers, calipers, machinist levels, and Pi tapes.

Troubleshoot fit/form problems and advise on corrective actions.

Operate and set up all common welding equipment (SMAW, GMAW, Air Carbon‑Arc, Oxy‑fuel, plasma, and track burners).

Maintain accurate job records and submit daily construction reports.

Communicate with clients to ensure satisfaction with job progress and quality.

Collaborate with technical support departments within Metso.

Visit customers with the sales force to develop service business opportunities.

Maintain safe work practices and proper repair techniques.

Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Technical degree or high school graduate with mechanical maintenance/millwright/welding experience.

At least 2 years of millwright or welding experience in mining or heavy construction industries.

Field welding experience, ideally on grinding mills, crushers, and other process machinery.

Welding certifications are highly valued.

Previous MSHA training is favorable.

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; ability to pass DOT physical requirements.

Strong knowledge of process equipment (crushers, conveyors, pumps, screens, mills).

Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision and to make quick, accurate decisions.

Excellent organizational skills and accurate record‑keeping.

Clear verbal communication skills.

Basic welding and torch‑cutting skills (air arc, oxygen‑acetylene). Mobile equipment operation experience is a plus.

Understanding of basic rigging and PPE selection.
