Job Summary Performs a variety of technical and clerical functions that include the procurement and processing of laboratory specimens and perform venipuncture using laboratory established procedures effectively and providing clerical support in the Clinical and Anatomic Pathology areas.

Essential Job Functions

Answer and handle or screen and transfer telephone calls.

Appropriately use venipunctures and finger stick/heel stick procedures on infants and children.

Using standardized venipuncture technique, obtain specimens from designated patients accurately and efficiently for different age groups.

Assist in procurement of other clinical specimens including bone marrow and other procedures as required.

Contribute to a safe, organized, and efficient workplace by complying with established hospital and departmental policies.

Accurately perform patient identification (2-factor identification), collect and label specimens, and submit accurate, complete paperwork for clinical assays.

Process specimens according to laboratory procedures and ensure accurate and timely testing.

Investigate and resolve discrepancies, communicating findings to appropriate personnel.

Collaborate with other lab and hospital personnel for efficient reporting of lab results.

Dispose or store specimens appropriately.

Draw blood from inpatients, outpatients, and ER patients as needed.

Maintain competency and credentialing files.

Handle clerical tasks related to test requests and reports.

Follow asepsis and antisepsis principles in all duties.

Foster continuous improvement in patient care quality.

Provide professional and courteous patient and visitor assistance.

Perform clerical functions in the laboratory office.

Communicate verbally with hospital personnel.

Order, receive, store, and distribute supplies, maintaining a clean work area.

Perform other job-related duties as delegated.

Handle patient responsibilities in line with standard of care.

Process incoming/outgoing test results and laboratory service requests.

Promote professionalism and cooperation in interactions.

Promote excellent customer relations through clear communication and supportive interaction.

Properly label and prepare specimens for distribution or external testing facilities.

Participate in the organization's quality control and continuous improvement programs.

Job Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent (minimum).

Preferred: Two years of college with a major in biological sciences, chemistry or equivalent.

Minimum one year experience working in a clinical laboratory or anatomic pathology lab.

California Phlebotomy Certification – CPTI or CPTII required.

BLS certification required and must be maintained.

Pay Hourly rate range: $23.69 – $30.95.
