Sanitation Equipment Operator – City of Johnson City, Tennessee The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Sanitation Equipment Operator with Solid Waste Services. The employee performs difficult semiskilled work driving sanitation equipment or related equipment, loading, and unloading collected materials; does related work as required.

Essential Functions of Position

Operates front loading, rear loading, roll-off and related collection vehicles and equipment.

Operates recycling collection and transportation equipment.

Operates backhoes, front loaders, forklift, bobcat and related equipment in moving and handling refuse, garbage and recyclable materials.

Picks up and empties garbage cans, refuse carts, recycling bins.

Performs operational and fluid checks on equipment, washes, cleans and maintains equipment.

Transports garbage, refuse and recyclables to disposal areas.

Might instruct subordinate operators in finer points of operation and service of assigned equipment.

Participates in sanitation activities when the nature of work does not require constant operation of assigned equipment.

Repairs and services equipment.

Maintains daily log of collection activity.

Performs pickup and delivery of commercial and residential containers of new and terminated customers.

Performs related tasks as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, prolonged standing, and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (25-50 pounds).

Advises customers and co-workers of resource recovery and recycling rules and regulations.

Delivers, removes, and maintains city provided recycling containers and bins, as directed.

Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and other regulations governing automotive equipment operation; operating and repair characteristics of heavy automotive and similar public works equipment; component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of equipment.

Thorough knowledge of city and county, including location and layout of streets and alleyways.

Ability to service various types of equipment and to make minor running repairs.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and to prepare required reports.

Skill in the operation of moderately complex equipment; physical strength and agility sufficient to operate equipment in occasionally adverse weather conditions; manual dexterity required to operate machinery.

Acceptable Experience and Training Completion of high school diploma or GED is desirable; some experience in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks, specialized automotive equipment, or related automotive equipment; any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable. The ability to obtain a Tennessee Commercial Vehicle Driver License (CDL) within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment. The City will provide the required training to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Recent experience driving solid waste collection vehicles is desirable. Pre‑employment DOT physical, drug screening and background check required.
