Position Summary

The Field and Central Intake Driver is a key member of the citywide 24/7 shelter intake and transportation team. This position combines frontline client engagement, mobile intake processing, and safe transport to shelter sites. Staff in this role operate agency vehicles across Chicago’s 77 community areas to respond to shelter referrals, conduct field-based intakes, and support the centralized intake facility when needed. The ideal candidate has excellent driving skills, strong interpersonal communication, and the ability to complete data entry under pressure in a fast‑paced, trauma‑informed environment. Key Responsibilities

Transportation and Navigation

Operate agency‑assigned vehicles to transport individuals and families experiencing homelessness to designated shelter sites across Chicago. Use GPS tools and real‑time dispatch communication to navigate efficiently and safely to pick‑up and drop‑off locations. Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of vehicles and report maintenance needs.

Field‑Based Shelter Intakes

Conduct mobile intakes on‑site at hospitals, police stations, or public spaces as assigned. Collect necessary client data including demographics, needs, and housing history, using electronic tablets or paper forms. Verify eligibility and communicate with dispatch, DFSS, and shelter partners to confirm placements.

Centralized Intake Support

Assist with intake support at the central intake facility as needed, including helping walk‑in clients complete assessments, verifying availability, and preparing for transportation. Provide crowd management and de‑escalation support during high‑volume shifts. Maintain accurate, timely records in The Grove and DFSS systems.

Client Engagement & Safety

Establish a respectful, calm, and trauma‑informed environment during all interactions. Support client safety, ensure use of seatbelts, maintain vehicle cleanliness, and offer basic supplies (e.g., water, hygiene kits, emergency blankets). Report any concerns about client wellbeing or safety incidents to supervisors and follow critical incident protocols.

Documentation & Reporting

Complete all trip logs, intake records, and system entries (e.g., The Grove, spreadsheets, or agency apps) in real time or by shift end. Participate in debriefs, shift huddles, and ongoing training to improve service delivery. Maintain confidentiality and follow all privacy policies, including HIPAA and data‑sharing rules.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Valid Illinois driver’s license with a clean driving record. 2+ years of experience in shelter, social services, outreach, transportation, or related roles. Familiarity with GPS, dispatch tools, mobile devices, and cloud‑based data entry. Strong customer service and crisis de‑escalation skills; able to work with vulnerable populations. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, enter/exit vehicles frequently, and drive long distances during shift. Willingness to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Successful background check and required health clearances. Bilingual English/Spanish or other language proficiency a plus. Seniority level
