Overview
Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the phersis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Responsibilities
- In compliance with SOPs, performs all aspects of the phersis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set‑up, monitoring and disconnect.
- In compliance with SOPs and FDA guidelines, performs venipuncture to begin the phersis process.
- Evaluates vein performance to identify problems; makes required corrections to expedite donation and ensure quality and safety.
- Ensures donation process is efficient and makes timely adjustments for a positive donor experience.
- May educate new donors on therapeutic products, screening, appointment system, fees, policies, nutrition, and other relevant info; answers questions professionally.
- Maintains alertness for donor reactions and assists or notifies appropriate staff.
- Uses Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during the phersis process such as machine alerts, volume variances, or adverse events.
- Performs calibrations and verifies maintenance as per SOPs; resolves complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
- Troubleshoots equipment failures; documents incidents and removes or replaces equipment if needed.
- Monitors donor flow to assure continuous turnover; alerts Director/Lead of any flow issues.
- Collects arm or whole blood samples for testing.
- Ensures accurate recording of donor data in electronic system per SOPs.
- Understands policies for hyperimmune programs when applicable.
- Maintains clean and efficient environment, ensures operating supplies, follows HSE and OSHA policies, promotes safety.
- Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.
- May be cross‑trained in other areas to meet business needs.
- May require bilingual skills as needed.
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience
- Internal CSL employees must have completed CSL Plasma training.
- External candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a phlebotomist, preferably one year.
- Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health‑care environment preferred.
Working Conditions
- Ability to complete routine forms or conduct routine oral communications.
- Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions.
- Must be able to see, speak with customers and observe equipment operation.
- Occasionally perform tasks while standing and walking up to 100% of time.
- Reach, bend, kneel and have high manual dexterity.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures and blood‑borne pathogens.
- Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment during specific tasks or areas.
- Required to work overtime and extended hours to support operational needs.
- Base pay: $15.85–$20.60 per hour (range may vary by location).
