Position Summary SRL is the national reference laboratory for Sonic Healthcare USA. As part of this esoteric testing lab, our staff gain new experiences with a unique test menu within a culture of quality and innovation, where we focus on lean processes fueled by a belief in empowered continuous improvement. The Junior Core Lab Development Scientist is responsible for conducting research and development of new assays in a reference laboratory setting. This position works closely with the Core Scientific Director, R&D Scientist, and Senior R&D Scientist to maintain launched assays throughout their production life including transition of current assays on replacement instrument platforms, assist/conduct verification/validation studies of novel assays in the core laboratory, and assist/lead special projects as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist/Conduct research and development of new assays in the Core Lab

Assists/Coordinates with manufacturers and other laboratories for validation/verification materials

Assists/performs validation/verification studies by conducting runs and collecting data

Assists/Insures proper LIS build, instrument interfacing, and results reporting

Assists/Composes validation plans, summaries, and standard operating procedures

Adheres to defined time line for development of assays

Maintain launched assays throughout production life

Transitions current assays on replacement instrument platforms

Transitions current assay across different reagents with identical methodologies

Utilizes technical skills/abilities to perform laboratory testing as needed

Ability to competently perform moderate and high complexity testing

Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results

Understands and operates test systems proficiently

Ability to troubleshoot test systems and take appropriate action where indicated

Maintain bench competency as assigned

Utilizes job knowledge, judgment and problem solving skills to ensure quality

Follows established policies and procedures for quality control performance and documentation

Performs and documents scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance on instruments while in R&D phase

Identifies problems which may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action, including supervisor notification if indicated

Understands and follows all safety, infection controls and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen guidelines

Participates in departmental quality assurance programs

Participates in the laboratory continuing education program

Effectively utilizes departmental resources

Demonstrates efficiency by performing procedures rapidly and determining priority

Utilizes appropriate supplies with minimal waste

Operates equipment to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime

Utilizes unstructured time constructively

Utilizes personal and professional skills to promote laboratory relations

Communicates with laboratory staff and its clients to ensure quality patient care

Maintains and supports a service oriented relationship with affiliate labs

Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to clients and patients

Strives to maintain a positive work environment

Enthusiastically performs miscellaneous duties with completion in a designated time frame

Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required:

Knowledge of basic clinical laboratory technique (e.g. ELISA, CLIA, clinical chemistry, IFA)

Ability to monitor experiments, read, analyze and interpret technical reports

Ability to write accurate and concise documents

Ability to perform assays and collect data

Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods

Experienced with computer software including MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook.

Operational knowledge of complex lab instrumentation

Ability to handle multiple priorities and manage stress appropriately

Preferred:

Experimental design

Experience with laboratory information systems

Advanced experience/knowledge in process design and workflow management

Education and Experience

B.S. degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science AND 3 years of pertinent laboratory experience

OR

a M.S. degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science AND 2 year of pertinent laboratory experience

Licensure and Certifications

Preferred: Certified as Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist, by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) OR equivalent certification
