Public Safety Emergency Call Taker I/II

Overview The Office of Homeland Security (OHS) seeks qualified applicants for Public Safety Emergency Call Taker I/II positions in the Public Safety Communications (PSC) Division. The role is critical to maintaining and supporting public safety by collecting, transmitting, and documenting emergency and non‑emergency calls in a secure, windowless office environment.
Key Responsibilities
Operate a workstation comprising Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), GIS mapping, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), and other critical systems to triage and process incoming 9‑1‑1 calls.
Initiate service calls using appropriate emergency dispatch protocols and provide pre‑arrival, CPR or other life‑support instructions as needed.
Receive and record information from callers, including those using text or the Deaf Teletype system, and enter data accurately into CAD.
Interpret and utilize information from NCIC, METERS, and other databases for background checks and operational decisions.
Communicate with hearing‑impaired callers via the Maryland Relay 7‑1‑1 system and with non‑English speakers using the language line service.
Maintain logs and records for all operations and support other County, State, or Federal agencies when appropriate.
Essential Employee Conditions
Must be willing and able to work a twelve‑hour rotating shift, 10‑ 12 hour shifts, and be available during emergencies or special events.
All work must be performed onsite; telework not permitted.
Applicants must be willing to report as an essential employee during natural or man‑made disasters and other emergencies.
Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D.
One year of practical work experience, including at least one year with Windows‑based computer programs.
Pass the agency‑specified entrance examination and a 9‑1‑1 Specialist exam (pre‑tested applicants may be exempt).
Completion of required training: NAED Emergency Telecommunicator (ETC), Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD), Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD), NCIC (CN2), and CPR/BLS certification.
Ability to mobilize to the primary center in Bowie or the backup center in Landover, use a vehicle or reliable transportation, and maintain a professional appearance.
Selection Process
Phase 1 – Qualifications Review, Pre‑Employment Examination, and preliminary screening.
Phase 2 – Background Investigation, Psychological Screening, and Medical/DDrug Screening.
Phase 3 – Final Offer, Employment confirmation, and completion of the PSC training session.
