The

Chief Credit Officer

(CCO) is a member of the credit union’s executive team and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the credit union’s credit function. This executive ensures that all lending activities are conducted within the credit union’s risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and policy guidelines. The CCO oversees credit quality, portfolio performance, underwriting standards, and credit administration processes to ensure sound asset quality and sustainable loan growth.

What You’ll Do

Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive credit policies, procedures, and underwriting standards consistent with the credit union’s risk appetite.

Oversee all credit risk functions, including underwriting, portfolio monitoring, and collections.

Approve or recommend credits within delegated authority and ensure consistent application of policy across all lending teams.

Manage the identification, reporting, and resolution of problem credits and ensure proper risk ratings and documentation.

Monitor portfolio performance, concentrations, and trends to identify emerging risks.

Ensure compliance with lending limits, regulatory guidance, and audit recommendations.

Provide oversight for the entire loan portfolio, ensuring proper diversification, documentation, and compliance.

Lead, coach, and develop credit and lending personnel to maintain a strong risk management culture.

Provide training and guidance to lenders and credit officers on policy interpretation, risk assessment, and structuring.

Partner with market presidents and commercial lenders to structure and manage complex or high‑risk credits.

Foster collaboration between lending, operations, and credit administration to promote efficiency and accountability.

Chairs the Commercial Loan Committee as a voting member.

Chairs the Executive Loan and Credit Governance Committee.

Chairs the loan and deposit pricing Committee.

Presents regular credit quality and risk management reports to management, the Board of Directors, and regulators.

Contribute to the credit union’s strategic planning, capital management, and asset/liability discussions.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics, or a related area. MBA or advanced degree preferred, formal credit training preferred.

A strong understanding of commercial, SBA, real estate, agricultural, and consumer lending.

Deep knowledge of credit risk management principles, regulatory compliance, and loan portfolio analytics.

Familiarity with CECL, stress testing, and loan loss provisioning.

Minimum 15-20 years of commercial credit and lending experience, including at least 5 years in a senior or executive credit leadership role.

Strong interpersonal, leadership, and supervisory skills.

Well organized.

Attention to detail.
